Last meeting:
Crewe Alexandra 1, Norwich City
3 (May 9, 2004): With
the Division One championship
in the bag, the final match
of a triumphant campaign was
always going to be about providing
a fitting send-off to one of
the greatest goal scorers ever
to pull on a Norwich City shirt.
And, in a season when everyone’s
wishes have tended to come true,
that’s just what happened
as Iwan Roberts scored two goals,
one of them an absolute corker,
to bring the curtain down on
a wonderful career in highly
appropriate fashion.
Chances:
Dean Ashton’s departure
in January was the catalyst
for a remarkable slump that
saw Crewe freefall from a comfortable
spot in the top-half of the
table to only escaping relegation
on the final day of last season.
Boss Dario Gradi has worked
wonders over the years in keeping
the Railwaymen competitive in
the Championship on a meagre
budget but he will know that
the squad will need strengthening
if they are to not carry over
last seasons woeful form into
the new campaign.
