Mr Consistency’s halo slipped slightly
during his Premiership season but after a small blip he recovered
to turn in a series of good performances once again. Was often
left exposed on the left flank due to the Canaries’
tactics, but his ability and cool head will ensure he will
once again be a key player for Norwich this season.
It was a long, hard season for the former City captain who
played well in some games – and looked distinctly uncomfortable
in others. Showed his character to win his regular place back
after losing it for the first time in his Norwich career and
played his part in the late revival. But overall it's fair
to say that his first taste of Premiership football has been
a testing experience.
Verdict: Should be a regular in the first
team next season – don't expect too many right wingers
to get the better of him in the Championship.
OFF DUTY
(2004):
Marital status: Girlfriend
Helen. We’ve been together for five years.
Children: None.
Home: Loddon
Current car: BMW.
First car: Ford Fiesta.
How do you relax away from football: I’m
not someone who finds it easy to switch off from football.
If we’ve just played a game – or there’s
one coming up – it will generally be on my mind. I find
the best way to relax is to be at home doing nothing much
in particular, although I do enjoy the occasional game of
golf. I also like walking our dog, Solo.
Favourite other sport to watch: I’ll
watch anything that’s on, to be honest, but particularly
golf.
Favourite television programme: Only Fools
& Horses and The Office.
Favourite holiday destination: The USA. I
have been there three or four times and have always had a
good time. If I had to pick one destination I’d say
Las Vegas. We went there during the summer and really enjoyed
ourselves.
Favourite restaurant/eating place: We’re
not great ones for eating out to be honest. We’re quite
happy to stay in.
Favourite read: The Sun.
Favourite film: The Shawshank Redemption.
Recommended listening: Oasis and Eminem.
Best thing about living in Norfolk: The people.
They are extremely friendly and I’ve always felt really
at home here. I also love Norfolk as a county – you
couldn’t wish for a nicer place to live.
Worst thing about living in Norfolk: I can’t
really think of one.
Who’s is the first result you look out for:
Peterborough.
What was the first team you ever played for:
Cottenham Juniors in Cambridgeshire. The first professional
club I ever represented was Norwich City. I was there between
the age of 14 and 15 and played alongside the likes of Darren
Kenton and Adrian Forbes. I was playing in midfield in those
days and wasn’t really getting anywhere so it wasn’t
too much of a surprise when I was released. I remember agreeing
with their decision at the time!
What would you have done for a living if you hadn’t
made the grade: As a kid I always fancied being a
vet – until I realised some of the things they had to
do!
What will you do when your playing career is over:
I’d like to stay in the game, maybe in a coaching capacity.
I certainly don’t think I’d ever fancy being a
manager.
