The strapping young defender made a big impression when he
broke into the first team last season, and provided one of
the bright spots in an otherwise gloomy season. Strong in
the challenge, he appeared to make the step up into the senior
side effortlessly and will look to continue his footballing
education in the Championship.
Never got a look-in early on, but took his opportunity with
both hands when it was presented to him. Turned in a series
of solid displays in the centre of City's defence, even though
his formidable physical presence failed to halt the tide of
goals flowing past Robert Green.
Verdict: If he can cope with the likes of
Alan Shearer, Didier Drogba and Alan Smith he should certainly
feel at home in the Championship. Won't be taking anything
for granted, though, because this young man's feet are firmly
in the ground.
OFF DUTY (2004):
Marital status: Single.
Children: None.
Home: I’m still living in digs at Cringleford.
Current car: Renault Clio.
First car: That is my first car!
How do you relax away from football?: I’ll
watch the telly at home or maybe go out with my girlfriend.
All the lads work very hard in training and out on the pitch
so it’s important to relax a bit when you get the chance.
Favourite other sports to play: Golf and
snooker. I used to play golf a lot when I was younger and
got my handicap quite low but I’ve not played much since
I’ve been up here. Now I’d probably play off 16
or something like that. As far as snooker is concerned, well
my highest break is about 20. That tells you all you need
to know!
Favourite other sport to watch: I just like
watching football, to be honest.
Favourite holiday destination: Gran Canaria.
Favourite television programme: Friends.
Favourite film: Gladiator.
Favourite restaurant/eating place: The Village
Inn at Little Melton.
Recommended listening: I’m not a great
music fan and I tend to stick to the compilation CDs. As far
as a style of music is concerned, I’d say R&B is
my favourite.
Best thing about living in Norfolk: It’s
a nice relaxed pace of life up here. I live in a nice place
and home (Stevenage) is less than two hours away so I certainly
can’t complain.
Worst thing about living in Norfolk: I can’t
think of one.
First result you look out for: Arsenal.
First team you played for: Symons Green in
Stevenage.
What would you have done for a living if you hadn’t
made the grade?: To be honest I haven’t got
a clue. I always had my sights set on becoming a pro.
What would you like to do when your playing days are
over?: That’s hopefully a long way off but
I’d like to stay in the game, perhaps in a coaching
role.
