Irish international Doherty joined City at the start of their
Premiership campaign of 2004/05, making his debut away at
Manchester United after signing from Spurs. Capable of playing
up front or as a centre back, Doherty has established himself
in the latter position, and was named player of the season
following the 2005/06 campaign. He endured a less successful
season last time around, but he will be looking to bounce
back this time around and re-establish a strong defensive
partnership with Shackell. When he’s good he’s
very good – but he wasn’t consistent enough last
season and made a few howlers he’d prefer to forget.
