Norwich City's fighting spirit finally restored pride in the team after a thrilling East Anglian derby at Carrow Road. Second half goals from new signing Martin Taylor, courtesy of a deflection off a Town player, and Jamie Cureton earned the Canaries a well-earned point coming back from two-nil down.

Ipswich had led 2-0 at the interval thanks to goals from Alan Lee and Pablo Counago.

Norwich were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time at the end of the game when Darren Huckerby was shown the red card.

New manager Glenn Roeder made four changes to the Norwich City side for his first match in charge in today's derby against Ipswich Town.

There was a surprise recall in midfield for Frenchman Julien Brellier, while Luke Chadwick was preferred to Lee Croft on the right. Dion Dublin returned in attack after missing three games with a back injury and new loan signing Martin Taylor made his debut in defence.

Ian Murray and Jimmy Smith were relegated to the bench alongside Croft and John Hartson, and there was no place in the 16 for Chris Martin or Michael Spillane.

Ipswich were without injured midfielder Tommy Miller and played two men up front - Pablo Counago and Alan Lee.

The hosts started at breakneck speed and Cureton had already flashed one header wide from a Jon Otsemobor cross when Dublin was desperately close to giving City the lead after six minutes, his
flying header from Cureton’s cross clawed away magnificently by 'keeper Neil Alexander.

Cureton forced Alexander into action again with a 15th-minute snapshot and it was not until two minutes later that Town threatened for the first time when David Marshall foiled Owen Garvan, saving with his legs.

Dublin’s diving header from a Darren Huckerby cross flew wide midway through the half, but very much against the run of play, Town took the lead after 26 minutes.

Alan Lee nodded on Alexander’s long ball upfield to Pablo Counago and took a return pass before coolly tucking a low shot past Marshall just inside the post.

City were not subdued and twice in the space of three minutes they could have levelled, Jason Shackell's header from a Huckerby cross hitting the post and Cureton shooting horribly wide after Darel Russell had pursued a Brellier through-ball.

Yet, five minutes before the break, it was 2-0 with the most bizarre goal.

Russell was penalised just outside the City box, Lee’s weak free-kick deflecting off Chadwick into the path of Billy Clarke.

Marshall blocked Clarke's initial shot but the youngster hooked the ball back, when it appeared it may have been out of play, for Counago to tap home.

Even then, City should have cut the gap a minute before the break when Lappin's cross caused a mad scramble, in which Chadwick worked the ball to Cureton, only for the striker to poke a second golden chance past the post when it seemed easier to score.

There were first half bookings for two Ipswich players - Legwinski and Counago, both for fouls on Chadwick.

Half-time: Norwich City 0, Ipswich Town 2

Hartson's introduction for the hamstrung Dublin did not diminish City’s threat. If anything it made them even more potent.

It was Hartson’s determination that won the corner from which City reduced the arrears after 54 minutes. Lappin’s inswinging kick was met by the head of another loan player, debutant Martin Taylor, and his header took another deflection off Garvan on its way past Alexander.

Two minutes later, Chadwick weaved his way through brilliantly to be denied by Alexander, but with Carrow Road in full voice, an equaliser looked certain to come.

It almost arrived on 64 minutes when Otsemobor picked out Hartson, whose flick set up Cureton, but Alexander did enough to deflect his lob wide.

Two minutes later, however, a repeat move put City level. Hartson nodded on Marshall’s long ball and this time Cureton had just enough time to lift it right-footed over the advancing ’keeper for a superbly-taken equaliser.

After 69 minutes Lee had the ball in the net for Town but his effort was disallowed.

It could have been 3-2 with 20 minutes left when Alexander kept out Hartson’s 20-yard drive with another fine save, and there were muted penalty shouts as Garvan appeared to shove Huckerby.

Five minutes later Hartson shot into the side netting after a free kick by Otsemobor.

But with Chadwick and Cureton substituted, City lost a little momentum in the final 15 minutes and a game they should have won could still have been lost.

Lappin headed off the line from Walters after 77 minutes and then Marshall denied Haynes when he diverted his close-range effort on to the bar with his knee.

Huckerby’s stoppage time red card for a high challenge on Walters was an unfortunate – and costly – way to end such a fine contest.

Result: Norwich City 2, Ipswich Town 2
