Norwich City defender Gary Doherty admitted he is still some way from agreeing a new contract which would see him at Carrow Road next season. The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international is out of contract next month and with City boss Glenn Roeder having already released nine of his first team squad, he can ill afford to lose anyone else.

Glenn Roeder has defended his liberal use of the loan system as he prepares to beg, steal and borrow again this summer. The Canaries manager signed 10 players during his first six months at Carrow Road - and could start the new season with as many as five more on the books.

Darren Huckerby could be heading into a trans-Atlantic tug-of-war for his services. The 32-year-old was axed by Norwich manager Glenn Roeder last week and is being linked with a whole host of new challenges after his four-and-a-half years at Carrow Road, with a move overseas looking the favourite.

Glenn Roeder has outlined the main thrusts of his summer recruitment strategy as he prepares for a genuine assault on promotion next season. Roeder said that two thirds of a promotion squad would need to be Premiership quality and that more loan players would be coming in.

Eagle lands new contract
Winger Robert Eagle is to sign a new one-year contract with Norwich City, manager Glenn Roeder confirmed today. Eagle, 21, did not make a first team appearance last season and figured only twice as an unused substitute, at Manchester City in the Carling Cup and in the home game against Barnsley.

Toronto FC chief Mo Johnston has not ruled out an MLS escape route for Norwich reject Darren Huckerby. The 32-year-old was reportedly a January target for the Canadian franchise which has a growing Canary enclave with Huckerby's ex-Carrow Road team mates Jim Brennan and Carl Robinson plying their trade in the embryonic league.
