How Ironic is Promotion
I love football and watch it all the time. I particularly like watching the Premiership and the speed and skill levels of the players, but for me football at King's Lynn is what it is all about, it is REAL football! Thinking back to Saturday's game at Merthyr and the interaction between the fans and the team is one of the things that makes it such a joy. Can you imagine the likes of Rooney, Ronado, Lampard, Drogba, Gerrard or Torres walking across from the changing rooms eating sausages and chips from a polystyrene container, and stopping to chat and shake hands with everyone who wanted a bit of their time? None of this scribbling a quick illegible signature on a scrap of paper as they stride past without even breaking step. Can you picture the Arsenal fans in the bar at the Emirates singing to Garry Lewin "We've got the fittest physio in the league" (a reference to our lady physio) while the team and management watch and join in? Can you imagine standing with the superstars and drinking a beer after the game with no security to spoil the occassion? How about having the Premiership trophy in the clubhouse for all to see and touch and be photographed with, and the players willingly joining the fans to be snapped next to it? You can certainly forget about running on the pitch and joining in with the players celebrations at the likes of Anfield etc!
The irony of all this is that we all want our team to win matches and progress up the leagues, ultimately getting promoted to a higher level and the higher we go the more we lose all of the above things which makes it so enjoyable.
I'm like every other supporter and want success for the team and the town but every step further we take up the ladder will always be tinged with a little sadness that us fans gradually become just that little bit more removed from the players we love to watch. Even in the Conference Premier the stewards try to make you sit down and watch the game, with more stewards, no drinking on the terraces like at Merthyr, personally I'd rather be at a match at this level then be at a Premiership or Championship ground surrounded by strangers being stuck in one position for the entire match.
Mind you, I wouldn't change a thing about this season however, and in particular Saturdays celebrations!
All I hope for is for us to be competitive in the Conference South and we'll see where that takes us.
