Indie Will Eat Itself
Just read this article on the Independent and am relieved, I thought I was the only one out there who truly thought that "Indie" music had finally died a death.  Its pathetic and it makes me angry as I sit in my office being forced to listen Radio 1.  Indie music is dead; long live electro, new-wave, beats... Yes [Y]

Spot on Evil.A brilliant article, well written and sadly true. There are too many bands (record companies) jumping on bandwagons just for a quick buck.Luckily for us their a lot of good music out there, just have to wade through the crap to get to it! I feel sorry for you having to listen to Radio 1.I have to listen to the 'lovely' Jo Whiley for half an hour, thats bad enough.

The woman is actually the spawn of Satan. A 43 year old woman spouting off about whatever indie-kit band the NME is pushing or (by the same token) whatever band her husband is in charge of at that time..........

I HATE HER!

I HATE HER!

I HATE HER!

I HATE HER!

I HATE HER!

I HATE HER!

Seriously, not a fan.

Jo Whiley is my nemesis... if she's credited here with helping in the rise of Indie then she must also take some of the responsibility for its death with her sycophantic ways...

Good article that, there are some truly awful bands about at the minute.

"Scouting for Girls are like the sound of Satan's scrotum emptying. They're abysmal."

I think I might get a t-shirt made up with that on it!

"The ball is round. The game lasts ninety minutes. This much is fact. Everything else is pure theory."

here, here!

you could not be more right!!! the past few years of indie has done so little to impress me, dont get me wrong there are good new bands, but the prevelence of them is pathetic. in fact, it was so poor it turned me to stuff like electro, drum and bass and hip hop, really broadened by horizons! thanks rubbish indie music Big Smile [:D]

Re: Indie Will Eat Itself
Same here, Ryan.  I scrabbled around for ages trying to find something to fill the void - during that time I actually discovered a lot of acoustic/singer-songwriter type music, which is how I got into Beth Orton and Elliott Smith and the like.  I discovered Ryan Adams belatedly, and Regina Spektor, then moved back towards Rock with bands like Queens of the Stone Age and The Cooper Temple Clause.  I also stumbled across an eponomously titled album called LCD Soundsystem, and by the 15th track or so I was wigging out to Yeah (Crass Version) and the birth of my electro fetish was complete.

But its not all bad news for Indie, though.  There are a good number of bands out there still proudly flying the flag and doing the best they can.  I've been thinking about this and, for those of you who've moved away completely, here's some little recommendations for Indie You Might Have Missed (along with links to selected tracks, courtesy of LastFM):

Liam Finn - Okay, I only have the one song so far, but this chap is the son of Crowded House genius Neil Finn.  Scarily, this recommendation came from Jo Whiley! Tongue Tied [:S]
I Am Kloot - Simply genius.  If you ever get the chance to see them play a gig in Manchester, their hometown, then do so, its a joy to behold.
Infadels - Ignore the spelling error, they decided it wasn't worth changing.  Second album has gone a bit more mainstream but on their day they can still raise a smile.
Peter, Bjorn and John - Joyful indie pop at its best.  You all know Young Folks (the whistling song) but the rest of their work should be checked out immediately. Go now!
Stoney - Little fella from Sheffield, not very well-known but well worth a listen and great live.

Can't really think of any more off the top of my head.  Anyone else got any Indie recommendations or should we just let it die?

Re: Indie Will Eat Itself

Good call with I Am Kloot, one of the best gigs I have seen was them at Reading University about 3 years ago, only about 60 people turned up but to their credit they stepped it up and really made it an evening to remember, all their albums are quality and they just have to be checked out!!!

Don't know if you can class these purely as Indie but another few bands which are worth checking out are Camera Obscura, British Sea Power, Bat For Lashes, Delays, Air Traffic, Sunshine Underground and Morning Runner.

I'm sure that we will still get some decent "hidden gems" coming through but as things stand the mainstream pap which is flooding the market is giving Indie a bad name, having said that the electro genre is producing some decent new bands such as CSS, New Young Pony Club, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, MAPS and MGMT.

Agree regarding Electro, its so much more fresh and original than Indie these days, its taken over for so many people its unreal... The Whip are another good one, and I love Hot Chip too...

IAK are one of my favourite bands and I've had the pleasure of meeting Jonny Bramwell after a gig here in Manchester, great fella, though I think he was a little bemused by two grown lads turning into giggling fan-boys in his presence... we were lame!

Re: Indie Will Eat Itself

Totally forgot about Hot Chip - they are amazing, really put in a good live performance too, not had the chance to check out The Whip yet but as they come recommended I will make that my next purchase!! The other thing with electro is the diversity, it contains aspects of rock/indie/hip hop/alternative which gives something that everyone can enjoy.

Fair play, IAK come across as being a bunch of great guys who make great music, I will always have nothing but respect for them after that gig in Reading, despite the low numbers the atmosphere was amazing and every single person in that room left with a massive smile on their face. Big Smile [:D]

Re: Indie Will Eat Itself
I love the Electro genre... I went through my iPod this morning looking at the bands listed under Indie.  Most of them are classic bands like Stone Roses, Oasis, etc and the smattering of newer ones.  The number of Electro bands I have on there now is just staggering considering four or five years ago I used to scoff at anything that didn't have proper guitars and whatnot... oh, how young and naive I was...

Incidentally, does anyone on here actually use LastFM? I do and I love it, cos I'm a massive geek! If you like to know what your favourite bands of the week are, which songs you listen to the most, etc, then get signed up!  It now not only updates from songs played on your computer, but also from the iPod and it now updates in real-time, so no annoying waiting around for the end of the week! Crikey, I sound like an advert... anyway, check it out now y'all!

Re: Indie Will Eat Itself

I hate the way that the Radio molds us to listen to what they like.

So many people don't use their ears and listen to the decent music.

If you hear a song on the radio every day, you start to like it. It's not actually any good, I.E The Ting Tings.

I think that the likes of Huw Stephens, Steve Lamaq and Zane Lowe are refreshing. They play what they want to play and aren't scared to put something a bit different onto the radio.

Radio 1 should be setting the standards, not blindly  following the commercial stations. For a long time 6music was great for hearing new music during the day,but even that has gone downhill. Anyway sorry for that moan! Here is a couple of recommendations if you like electro (well sort of); HolyF*** bonkers but great, Battles esp. a song called Atlas;Evil Nines You Could Be Special Too,cracking mix of all sorts of dance and Adam Freelands stuff, which is excellent.

I've always found the local music scene to me more exciting than the crap on the radio. You just have to look harder... especially the glory days of the Ferryboat (before they gothed it up and ruined it)
