Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy was today keeping his spirits up despite the bitter disappointment of having to pull out of England’s Euro 2012 squad through injury.
The 25-year-old has been ruled out of the championships after suffering a broken finger in training.
Ironically, Ruddy has broken his ring finger, just a week before his wedding.
Ruddy was called up for the first time by new England boss Roy Hodgson for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine and was hoping to win his first cap against Norway in the friendly in Oslo tomorrow evening.
But he sustained the injury during his first training session yesterday and Hodgson has acted swiftly in calling up young Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland as his replacement.
Ruddy was still travelling with the England squad to Oslo today before returning for treatment – and was putting a brave face on the bad news.
“Thank you for the messages, gutted but determined to come back better next season, can’t wait for the wedding now!” Ruddy wrote on Twitter.
“Taken lots of positives from the two days’ training, and the biggest positive is that it happened with England before a major tournament!”
Ruddy had been given special dispensation by England boss Hodgson to miss the friendly against Belgium at Wembley on June 2 as it clashed with his wedding in Cambridgeshire to partner Laura.
He added: “Also to everyone who has asked . . . as if it wasn’t unlucky enough, it IS my ring finger and also my first ever broken bone!”
Ruddy’s injury has echoes of the misfortune suffered by then Norwich ’keeper Robert Green, who ruptured his groin taking a goal-kick in an England B international against Belarus, ruling him out of the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

"Gossip" on BBC teletext now has Rodgers and Liverpool back on its radar. We sad, bored NCFC fans just need to be fed a few titbits to keep us happy. If Rodgers really is to speak to Liverpool, then it`s a "forked tongue" scenario, which makes me think it is not true. A press confection. Spot on Phil, JMH, Swiss & Timbo, ref things happening, just elsewhere.

Watched that England Fiasco last night Greeno seemed ok, but Joe boy seemed a bit fed up . Midfielders did what midfielders do, which to me looked like nothing more than playing with themselves.... Carroll did well with little or no support !.. Our Grant would have done better, but of course he needs the Irishman. Nevertheless Roy, and any other manager tuned in...Try Specsavers!

Re: Holty transfer: is no news, good news? PR is the one part of NCFC I'm disappointed with. Are we just supposed to guess? I can't imagine any other club in the league doing this to it's fans re: transferring their star player ! They call us "the best fans in the world", well treat us like we are then. This continued silence is unbelievable.

No disagreement about the injury jinx but wasn't Ashton with West Ham when he got injured on England duty?

This NCFCEngland curse goes back over 25 years. Every Norwich player selected for England after Dave Watson in 1986 has suffered injury before or during their debut England game... Darren Eadie (twice), Robert Green, Dean Ashton and now John Ruddy.... just as well Grant Holt wasn't called up too.

It's an intereting point danpez, the shocking injury record of NCFC and former NCFC players for England. Now Roy is in charge, I seem to remember him claiming that we had put some sort of spell on WBA last season.

@MickH, I am sorry that you have left so you will not read this; however what I want to know and I believe most people do as well is (1) is PL staying, (2) is GH staying, (3) who is coming in and (4) who is leaving. The answer to 1,2 &3 is no comment, (4) Zak and Alby, as for the rest, no comment. We all realise that it takes time and that anything said by the club starts rummours, we are just frustrated fans who want it all now.

I quite agree Mad Brewer and am feeling unwell in admitting it. If Rupert Murdoch ran this place they would all be arrested as with that other newspaper whose name I will not mention bur could be construed as a yellow bright light in the another word I will not mention-it does look blue and there.is a lot of it.As a suggestion why not set up a Paul Lambert blog and a Grant Holt blog?

Sorry people. I have had enough of 'who is a troll?' 'Who isn't a troll business?. I foolishly expected these forums to be used to discuss the football related topics which eminate from Archant. But thanks to ridiculous censorship by Archant and the juvenile ramblings of 75% of those comenting here, I've decided to opt out. Please Archant, do something about all these stupid comments so that a sensible personn might find something of interest here!!

Hello All. I'm new to this and need help . I have been told that there are a lot of people who have the same name as me living in Norfolk and Suffolk. I was also told that some of them post on this site regularly, but use a variety of names....... It would be nice to know if you are a Stew Pydsodd, so we can be aware of Who's Who, without causing confusion. Any volunteering to go first?

I blame the Pink'Un for this, with its "Norwich keeper John Ruddy reveals long-term England plan" piece yesterday. It was always going to happen. However... Ruddy is still heading to Oslo for tomorrow's game. The hand injury will keep him out of goal, but with unlimited subs, the final squad deadline not until the 29th and JR originally an outfield player at Cambridge, there's still a chance that Uncle Roy might give him a couple of minutes on the pitch at the end so as to get himself a cap. Here's hoping...

What a shocking piece of luck for JR but now he can apply himself to the wedding. As for The Legend, please be aware that the definition of megalomania is a psycho-pathological condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-esteem and overestimation by persons of their connections, power and influence. Take the blue pill.

I was speaking to John yesterday afternoon Algarve, so I've known for a while, but you know me, I don't like to break the confidence that the players put in me. It was the same with Holt's transfer request, he told me in the players lounge after the Spurs game, but I had to keep a lid on it until it came out. Apart from the Lambert to Villa link, which I also knew about, there's only one other big story being suppressed at the moment. It won't be long though (and it's a red hot one!) All the best mate. Ged - Friend of the players.
