A five-star second-half display helped Lynn come from behind to beat Lincoln at The Walks tonight.
Ben Garrick’s 34th-minute opener gave the struggling visitors a surprise lead before strikes from Danny Beaumont and Steve Spriggs, playing at The Walks for the first time since his brief stint at Boston United, turned the game on its head.
The goal-machine winger slotted home again for the 20th time this season, from the penalty spot, before Shane Tolley and Dan Quigley put the gloss on the Linnets’ fine comeback triumph.
The hosts had started confidently and left-back Jordan Yong almost opened the scoring inside 10 minutes. However, his right-footed swinger was deflected and hacked away yards from the visitors’ goal-line. Striker Tolley saw an even better opening two minutes later, following fine play from Ross Watson and Spriggs, but he could only toe-poke the latter’s cross wide at the near post.
Spriggs still looked the likeliest player to break the deadlock and he went close twice before United took a shock lead.
Scott Coupland’s shot skewed across the hosts’ penalty area and an unmarked Garrick was there to apply the finishing touch. Despite Quigley’s header forcing a save out of Phil McGann, the Linnets didn’t respond well to the setback. And had Garrick punished Yong properly for a sloppy chested back-pass, which fell short of ‘keeper Danny Gay, it could have been 2-0 at the break.
As it was, Setchell’s men were only chasing a one-goal deficit. And one of his half-time substitutes, Beaumont, soon hauled Lynn level in the 51st minute. He smashed home Spriggs’ fine centre before Lynn’s top goalscorer slotted home a trademark goal from the right-hand side of the box two minutes later to put the yellows in front.
After Quigley had been hauled done by Steve Hone in the 65th minute, that man Spriggs scored another to show why Setchell was right to bring him back to The Walks.
Yong struck a post, Watson went close twice, before Tolley finally made it four and Quigley added a fifth – assisted by that man Spriggs again – who missed a sitter to bag his hat-trick. Josh Raby grabbed a late consolation for Lincoln with a stunning volley.
