King’s Lynn Town enjoyed a morale-boosting pre-season win last night by beating Histon 4-2.

The Linnets took the lead through Russell Dunkley’s eighth-minute header. But a terrible error from keeper Alex Street minutes later gifted the visitors an equaliser when he dropped the ball at Dan Holman’s feet, who slotted home.

A cracking header from Adrian Sears put Histon 2-1 in front inside what was an exciting opening 15 minutes at The Walks.

Lynn equalised five minutes before the break when Jamie Thurlbourne slotted home from the penalty spot.

And the hosts carried on where they had left off when Richard Bunting finished off a sweeping move to help Lynn regain the lead seven minutes after the re-start.

Thurlbourne cracked home a 30-yard strike in injury time to secure a win for Lynn who end their pre-season programme at Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.

Linnets boss Gary Setchell said: “What we’ve brought to the team was all on show. For one the never-say-die attitude when things went against us.

“The two goals we gave away were gifts but we kept digging in and stayed in the game and we played some good quality football, especially second half. We were hitting them on the break with pace and when we got a set piece I felt we were strong. “We’re working our socks off when we haven’t got the ball and it’s pre-season. It will stand us in good stead when the league starts.”

Striker Dunkley scored his third goal in as many starts and Setchell admitted the big man’s presence has been a huge boost to his side in recent matches.

“We always knew we were going to be stop-start at the start of the season as we lost Defty (Jack) in the summer and we got Dunkley in but he was on holiday for the first four games,” said Setchell.

“We couldn’t get a true reflection on how we were going to play. It’s obvious he makes a massive difference to us, no disrespect to the other players.

The way we play - trying to get the ball into the frontman and getting round him - we were never going to see the true King’s Lynn till he was back and fit and playing.

“That said, last night was just a pre-season friendly. We’re not getting carried away and we’re not swinging off the lampshades. It was another great work-out as Histon first-half were different class.

“It wouldn’t have mattered if we had drawn three and lost five in pre-season because the level of opposition we’ve played has been very, very good, which have tested us defensively and worked us all over the pitch.”

  • The Norfolk Knight is still regularly riveted by the words of G. Caney. Even though he doesn't say it as often as he used to. Bravo and Up The Linnets
