While Norwich City are in FA Cup action at Peterborough United, their stars of the future are on a very different mission closer to home.
The Canaries’ Under-21s will be hoping their ambitions of winning some silverware this term don’t go west when they welcome King’s Lynn Town for a Norfolk Senior Cup quarter-final (3pm).
Some of City’s brightest prospects, including England youth international Jacob Murphy who scored two goals against Dereham Town in the last round to set up today’s last-eight tie at Norfolk FA’s Football Development Centre in Bowthorpe, are expected to be on show.
But Linnets’ boss Gary Setchell will also name some of The Walks outfit’s young reserve-team stars in his squad and believes the clash will be beneficial to aiding their development.
He said: “Shaun Stocker is unfortunately not with us and we’ve got some other good young lads, like Kyran Stannard, who is 16, also at the club who won’t be involved.
“Luke Biles and Tom McLeish will be in the squad though. And although our lads might not be in quite the same league as Norwich it will be a good experience for them. It will give them a chance to see how far they are off that level.”
First-team defender Ryan Fryatt, 19, is set to feature against a team containing a host of the Premier League club’s Academy graduates — a set-up he was once part of.
Setchell said: “Ryan was close to getting a deal with Norwich as a youngster so it will be interesting to see how he gets on against players he used to play with after about two years in the non-league game.”
City knocked Lynn out of the county cup competition at the same stage last season by winning 1-0 at The Walks before losing to eventual champions Gorleston in the semi-finals.
