Dereham Town maintained their push for promotion with a comfortable 2-0 win at Romford in the Bostik League Division One North.

In the opening minute home keeper James May was forced to dive full length to keep out Jamie Forshaw’s 20-yard drive.

Rhys Logan was then crudely fouled outside the box but Danny Beaumont fired the free kick into May’s hands.

Romford were finding it hard to make inroads into the Dereham defence before Chris Taylor chested down to Max Austin, who volleyed way over in the 20th minute. Ryan Crisp combined well with Forshaw to create a half chance for the Magpies with May saving at Crisp’s feet.

It was Forshaw’s last involvement as the striker appeared to tweak his hamstring and he was replaced by Ashley Jarvis.

Dereham’s play started to become scrappy as they frequently lost possession cheaply. In the 40th minute Sam Borrer made a strong run through the centre but his attempted ball to Jarvis was intercepted.

A Crisp free kick caused panic in the home defence following good work by Jake Anema and the Magpies made the breakthrough in injury time at the end of the first half when Borrer headed home Beaumont’s corner.

Romford pressed after the break with John Nzenga delivering a dangerous ball across the face of the visitors box before Taylor saw his attempted lob deflected for a corner.

As the Essex side threatened again a timely block by Andy Howell denied Kai Heather from 14 yards.

Dereham increased their lead with a superbly worked goal in the 68th minute. Borrer found Beaumont on the right; the midfielder whipped an inviting ball towards the near post where Crisp moved swiftly to head home in fine style.

In the 70th minute Seamus Kelleher was dismissed for receiving a second yellow card. As Dereham regrouped keeper Jake Cox confidently saved Taylor’s low diagonal drive in the 83rd minute. The Magpies remained solid in the closing stages to take the points.
