Lowestoft Town produced another excellent performance to extend their winning run to four games – their best run since April 2014.
In a good all-round team display the Trawlerboys showed both sides of their character – a first half of attacking enterprise and a second of commitment and resilience as Kingstonian put them under some intense pressure.
Lowestoft took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the ninth minute. Travis Cole played a ball down the right for Jamie Forshaw and his cross found Rory Mcauley up with the attack. Mcauley’s goal-bound effort bounced out off keeper Rob Tolfrey, but Jake Reed reacted quickest to nod home the rebound for his 21st goal of the season – his highest season total in a Lowestoft shirt.
The Blues had a lucky let-off moments later following a left-wing corner – as the ball bobbled about in the six-yard box George Wells got his foot to it, but it spiralled up against the crossbar and was scrambled clear.
Lowestoft continued to have the upper hand, with Ryan Jarvis spraying the ball from flank to flank and Shaun Bammant having another fine game on the left.
Bammant produced a teasing cross which Tolfrey snatched off the boot of Reed before an Adam Smith free-kick dropped over Alan Inns and while Nico Cotton got his foot to the ball he lifted it over.
After a Bammant header had been saved by Tolfrey early in the second half, Kingstonian put the Lowestoft defence under some heavy pressure, but found Mcauley and Frazer Blake-Tracy outstanding in the middle and well supported by the two full-backs.
However, keeper Jake Jessup was only once called into serious action when saving at point-blank range after Pelayo Pico-Gomez had worked an opening.
The limping Travis Cole was replaced with 15 minutes left by Harry Barker’s whose fresh legs gave the Trawlerboys renewed impetus and he tested Tolfrey with a snap-shot from some 30 yards which saw the keeper scrambling across his line to save.
Lowestoft: Jessup, Cole (Barker 73), Smith, Fisk, Mcauley, Blake-Tracy, Forshaw (Hodd 64), Ryan Jarvis, Reed (Amisi 90), Cotton, Bammant, Sub not used: Docherty.
