Darren Huckerby is on cup duty tonight as Cringleford Vets take on their Thetford counterparts in the Norfolk Veterans Cup showdown.
Huckerby is fresh from one cup final success this week, in a coaching capacity, after his Norwich City Under 16s beat their Ipswich counterparts 4-1 at Portman Road on Thursday night to lift the Hospital Cup for the third year in a row.
And he hopes to make it a double as part of the Cringleford squad tonight.
Tonight’s teams both play in the Leathes Prior Norfolk FA Veterans Football League – Cringleford are currently competing for the title in the Premier Division so are plotting a potential league and cup double.
Their cup run began with a 5-0 win at home to Horsford United Veterans. They then received a walkover in the second round, taking them straight to the quarter-finals. A good 5-1 win away at Wealden FC Veterans meant that Cringleford faced title challenge rivals Quebec in the semi-finals.
After a brilliant 3-3 draw, the game went to extra time with Cringleford able to find an extra gear, cruising to a 7-3 victory and booking their place in the final at Norfolk FA’s Field of Dreams at the FDC at Bowthorpe.
Thetford are also having a good season, fighting for the title in Division Two – and with a double of their own on the cards.
Thetford began their cup journey with a 1-0 win at Norton Athletic Veterans. In the second round, they travelled to Attleborough, running out as 2-1 victors. Town were 4-2 home winners over Mulbarton in the quarter-finals, earning a last-four clash with Tavern Old Boys FC, who were fighting for the Premier Division title at the time. However, Thetford looked like a Premier Division side and booked their place in the final with a 3-1 win.
Tonight’s final kicks off at 7.30pm – tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
