James Maddison and Angus Gunn inspired Norwich City to a 1-0 Championship win at promotion hopefuls Bristol City.

Maddison fired a superb winner in the 79th minute, while Gunn made a fantastic save in injury-time to preserve a fourth clean sheet in five unbeaten games,

Daniel Farke was forced into two changes, bringing in Nelson Oliveira for Alex Pritchard, following the playmaker’s sale to Huddersfield in a deal worth an initial £11million.

The City head coach also included Mario Vrancic for the injured Tom Trybull as he retained the 3-4-3 formation deployed in the previous weekend’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea in the FA Cup.

The Canaries had the better of a tame opening 45 minutes, with Maddison testing Bristol keeper Frank Fielding with a swerving 20-yard shot in the 15th minute

Josh Murphy saw an effort cleared off the line before Oliveira pulled a shot wide.

Josh Brownhill thumped a shot against the Norwich bar during Bristol’s best spell of the game but it was Maddison who finished a flowing team move late on to spark wild scenes of celebration in the away end, and jubilation on the pitch at full-time.
