Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy’s breakthrough season has reached new heights after being called up to the England Under-21 squad for the first time.

The Canaries academy product scored his 10th goal of the season on Saturday and has been one of the bright spots of a disappointing Championship campaign so far.

He wasn’t named in the initial squad by U21s coach Aidy Boothroyd, for away friendlies against Germany on Friday (7pm) and Denmark next Monday (6pm), but has now replaced Chelsea’s Izzy Brown in the squad.

Brown, on loan at Huddersfield, had earned his first call-up but has had to pull out with an injury problem. That allows Murphy to continue his international youth career, having previous represented the Three Lions at U18, U19 and U20 levels.

Murphy, who also has six league assists to his name this season, spent last season on loan in League One with Coventry City and returned after scoring 10 goals in 42 games for the Sky Blues.

The 22-year-old’s rapid development has seen him become a key part of the Canaries team this season, with brother Josh also on the fringes of the team.

The London-born twins were raised in west Norfolk and joined City at 11 years old, both signing new long-term contracts during this season, amid reported interest from Premier League clubs.
