Jacob Butterfield has signed a four-year contract with Norwich City to become Chris Hughton’s second signing of the summer.
The former Barnsley captain, whose contract expired on June 30, arrives after a five-year spell at Oakwell and was unveiled at a press conference at Carrow Road this afternoon.
The England Under-21 international played 100 games in the Tykes midfield where he scored eight goals.
Butterfield said: “I am absolutely delighted, Norwich is a big club and did fantastic in the Premier League last season and after speaking to Chris about how much he wanted to bring me here to the club he really sold it to me.
“I’m really looking forward to getting on now and working under the gaffer. I spoke to him several times and was really impressed with him; his knowledge of football is second to none.
“It’s a big club and everyone knows that, the training ground is lovely and Carrow Road is a great stadium. I’ve met a lot of lovely people already and I’m delighted to have signed. I’m just looking forward to getting down here and getting in to it now.”
Manager Chris Hughton said: “He’s a player that has shown great form at Barnsley in the first half of last season playing off the front of the striker and he also spent some time in the wider areas there.
“He caught my eye not only last season, but in previous seasons. His form last year was a very good period for him and for anybody who didn’t know about him before, he certainly would’ve caught their eye last season.
“That is of course before he picked up an injury which is over now, which we are delighted about, but he’s a talent. He’s got that good balance between being a good age, but at 22-years old he’s also got that league experience as well. He’s a player very much on the up.”

BTW, ncfc5, Holty had 2 years left on his old contract and the new one is for 3. So he did get "just" the one extra year, which is just what he wanted. Well healed, Chris! It is a pity the issue got made public in the way it did; a Plague on Agents (and Twitter)! Iwan Roberts proven well wrong in "his" assessment. Hughton the Healer rules OK! OTBC.

Sogstar, do you really think that those two ticket-tearing twerps could have been Gerald & William? If so, keep them banned! CH is the most un-Roeder like manager imaginable. Take note, billy the illiterate bookie. OTBC.

Agree Canarygirl we are building a handy squad. Nice to see the tradition over the last few seasons continue - not case of "...you don't know what you had until it is gone..." more a case of "...you don't know who you are getting until they have signed..." This with Holt signing nice way to start the day out here OTBC

It is a fantastic day for the club! We still need a couple of defenders and another striker I reckon. I'm sure CH is already working on it, he hasn't really spent anything yet..that's very good business!

Don't think its too bad having another midfield player. We need strength in depth but more importantly those that can control the centre of the park and feed the strikers. I can see Butterfield and Howson working well together. Now that Holt is staying, thank goodness, another quality striker plus a couple more in defense and we are getting there slowly but surely!! Sounds a great signing. OTBC

Grant Holt contract signed. Fantastic news. Chris Hughton is clearly the right man for the job. I cannot wait for the new season and any remaining signings. OTBC!!

FANTASTIC, to think holt wasnt even going to get 1 extra year on his contract and now he gets 3 is excellent, norwich fans have to get behind him and not hold the transfer request against him, we will never know the full reasons, and as for the other two players... welcome to the next europa league champions :D

I think those two were 'billy' and 'gerald', Mad one. Very full in the midfield, so could be the end for Crofts or King of Spain? CH will need to assess quickly over the next couple of weeks' training.

Yes, Seb there will likely be a few departures in the midfield dept. But nobody has let us down and they are all better players for the experience. From Norwich 1 - Colchester 7 to this is surreal. I will never forget that dark, sunny day at Carrow Road in August 2009. Never Gunna. Give the season tickets back to the banned guys-as long as they promise to grow up. OTBC.

Anyone know what we can expect from Butterfield? Is he a box to box midfielder, or one that will sit in behind the strikers? One thing's for sure, we're not short of players who can play in the middle of the park now though! Think this could spell the end for some of those on the periphery last season, eg. Crofts.

Great news all round. Now maybe CH will be allowed to have a "holiday". He`s certainly been a busy bee so far! Holt to get a career 100 goals for Naaridge! Go for it!
