Pre-season continued with a 2-0 defeat away to an experienced Leicester City Under-23s team for Norwich City’s development squad.

Second-half goals from 2016 Premier League winners Danny Simpson and Andy King settled the friendly at the Foxes’ Belvoir Drive training complex.

“We weren’t great in possession in the first half, although we defended really well and restricted them to long shots,” City’s U23s head coach Matt Gill said. “At half-time, we spoke about being better in possession and dominating spells of play more. We then conceded a sloppy set-piece goal and that sparked us into life.

“I’d describe it as a ‘nearly’ performance. We did lots of good things without being clinical enough. It was a great experience against an experienced team with guys who have won the Premier League.

“Early on we didn’t have enough belief but we showed more authority as the game went on and we now have lots of good things we can work on.”

The friendly loss followed on from a narrow 1-0 loss away to National League side Sutton United on Saturday and a 2-0 defeat away to Colchester United U23s last week.

The young Canaries will now complete their pre-season preparations at Dereham Town on Monday (7.45pm) ahead of a first Premier League Two fixture at Aston Villa on Monday, August 13 (7pm).

“All the physical stuff is done now. It’s all about preparing for that first game,” Gill added, speaking to City’s website.

“We’d like to finish pre-season off with a win and take some momentum into the first game at Villa.”
