Norwich City have confirmed the expected signing of Sunderland centre back Michael Turner on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Turner becomes the Canaries’ second signing inside 24 hours following the arrival of former Leeds’ skipper Robert Snodgrass. Black Cats’ boss Martin O’Neill revealed on Thursday Turner had travelled to Norfolk to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical after City had a bid accepted for the former Hull defender. City chief Chris Hughton believes Turner’s top flight nous will be invaluable to the Canaries.
“I’m delighted to be able to bring Michael into the squad as he is a player with a wealth of Premier League experience,” he told the club’s official site. “At 28 years old he is joining us at a good age, and I’m happy to have been able to welcome him to Norwich City.
“Like with Snodgrass, (Jacob) Butterfield, and (Steven) Whittaker, it’s nice to bring players in with a good amount of time left in pre-season so they are able to gel with the squad ahead of the first game of the season.”
Turner was entering the final year of his current deal in the north-east, but O’Neill had stated their would be no fresh contract offer on the table for the former Charlton trainee, who moved to Sunderland for £4m in 2009.
“We have a number of centre-halves,” said O’Neill. “Since Michael came into the side under me, he’s stayed in the team. But, at the moment, I was unable to offer him an extension to his contract. Norwich came in with the promise of some extra years and it’s something he wanted to look at. But if things don’t develop, then he’s welcome back because he did as well as anyone in the last couple of months of the season.”

I suppose we have Cafu & Whittaker as main RBs. I don`t know whether George Francomb has potential? We only have Mad Marc as an out & out LB, though the King of Spain is more than competent in that position. How versatile are some of the manifold midfielders? Johnson can play LB I believe. On current performance, Hoots is on the case! OTBC.

Don't forget we are light at right back as well, now that Naughton has gone back. I would like two new full backs either on loan or bought.

Are we really sure he`s signed? A more recent article indicated that it hasn`t happened yet. Or it could be a "cut and paste" problem?

Speedy, ref. Turner`s accelerative powers, I cannot comment `cos I don`t think I`ve seen him play! He has a good track record, but is a grit ol` unit @ 6` 4" and solid with it, so don`t think he`s going to be a whippet. Agree with the "left-back wishers". Like cutty, I hope Vaughan does the business this season and have a feeling that he might. Fingers crossed.

Agree with you Jonny, would like to see more strength at the back, we let in too many goals last season

Was begining to think Wikipedia had got it wrong, a good signing! Re the striker issue I think this could be Vaughan's season and it didn't take the opposition a full season to work out our tactics with Holty and he still kept scoring.

I tend to agree with Mr. Ed. This time last year we had eight stikers - Holt, Morison, Jackson, Martin, Vaughan, Oli, Cody and Wilbraham - of which five are still with us. Last season City were the highest goalscorers outside the top six, and of those 52 goals 15 came from Holty, 9 from Moro, and the rest from the mid field (plus I think 3 or 4 from Jackson). Pilkington alone scored 8, and Wes, Benno, Howson and Bradley Johnson have also proved they can score a bit. And we have just signed Snodgrass, who is no slouch in the scoring department. The postion that needs most attention is not striker, but full back ...

Penfold - Of the 50 or so goals we scored last season, less than 30 were scored by 'strikers'. I think we'll have to 'agree to disagree' on whether we need another striker. Also, Turner has quite a good record from cornersset pieces.

I just dont see it, Morrison started well but then faded. Jackson is not good enough in my opinion for what its worth, and i just think if you want to survive in PL you need some variables other than Holt especially in the 2nd season when teams would have worked our threat out. Goals from midfield would be a bonus but i still think we need another striker if we are to get near 50 scored in PL season. Question is.... who would that be?

Penfold - "id love to see some decent competition for Jackson up front!! it would be nice if we could get a striker with pedigree as i think Holt will be marked closely next season and we need someone else for goals". I can only second what ImDrunky has said. also if Holt is going to be more closely marked, then surely it gives greater opportunity for others to score. I reckon we'll still score more than 50 goals next season!!!

I actually don't think we need a new striker, we have a few in Midfield who could easily get a few goals, and if Vaughan can keep fit then he will be big for us. I know C.Martin don't have to many fans here, but I do think he could do well this season if he gets a chance.

For me this is good news. Turner is an experience defensive player and that is just what we need. Hughton is making some quality signings and it seems everything is slowly coming together now. I'm sure there is more in the pipeline but we are getting strength and depth into the squad. Maybe one or two players will eventually leave but it looks at the moment as if Hughton is trying to involve everyone. I'd rather have too many than not enough; gives us plenty of options. And I think there are possibly more signings to come; very interesting!!

Someone who is experienced in the PL just what we needed, from what I've heard he is a pretty good defender. So a good buy =)

I think this is a good buy, he is at a good age and will provide good competition for places at the back! am still keen to see a full back bought in. Am thinking now we have so many mid-fielders whos going to be the first to leave?
