Sidney William Austin – better known as Sam – began life as a goalkeeper, but the transition to outfield player proved to be the making of him.

Born in Nottinghamshire, Austin represented City from his debut in 1920 until his departure in May 1924.

He hit the headlines in 1926 for an amazing performance at Old Trafford, which City won 6-1.

He scored two of the goals, he hit the bar twice and also the inside of a post.

Austin was known for his speed and his crossing ability.

Austin had played for his home town teams, Arnold United and Arnold St Mary’s, before moving to Norfolk.

His departure saw him head north to Manchester City (playing in the 1928 FA Cup final), followed by spells at Chesterfield, Kidderminster Harriers and in France, for RC Roubaix.

Austin’s son, Sam Junior, had a trial with Norwich in the early 1950s.
