Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has admitted defender Curtis Davies is his type of player – but stopped short of saying whether he would be making an offer to former club Birmingham for the 27-year-old.
Centre-half Davies has been tipped for a reunion with Hughton at Carrow Road, though new St Andrew’s boss Lee Clark insists there have been no bids for the former England Under-21 international.
“I do like him very much and he’s a player I admire,” said Hughton. “What I am doing at the moment is assessing what we need and possibly what might be available.
“It’s normal stuff, you make inquiries on which players might be available through agents and clubs. But everything we do we always do the right way. Anything that’s ever reported is never coming from us but, yes, he is a player I do like and I had the opportunity to work with.”
Asked if that meant he would be making a bid, Hughton said: “It’s not a yes, but it’s a player I do like, as with lots of other players. It’s the responsibity of our scouting network to identify players but that is an ongoing process week in, week out.
“Numbers wise the squad is big enough but it will be my decision over the next few weeks in this pre-season period on what I bring in and where I feel that we could do with strengthening.
“If you are going to bring players in, it is ideal to bring them in as early as possible but on most occasions that’s not the case. There hasn’t been much business done but over the next three or four weeks there will be.
“There might be positions where I feel I don’t need to strengthen and there might be positions where, for what’s available, I think we’ve got better here.
“Normally when a new manager comes in he wants to assess what he has. What I have is a team that has done well with good team spirit. I do want to improve the squad we’ve got but I have to be very conscious there’s a lot of good here and you don’t want to remove too much of that. It is important to keep what’s good here.
“But at the moment I do have the capability to be able to strengthen the squad and I would like to do that.”
Earlier this week, Clark said: “The club haven’t had an offer for Curtis and, from what I have seen, he looks extremely happy at this football club.”

Well if Archant haven't got the message by now then I don't know what!!! I find that a lot depends on the time of day you want to post your comment. Last night at about 9.30pm it seemed to be no problem at all. Mid morning and mid afternoon and the whole system seems to crash and ether everything. Interesting that!!!

BTW, Wisemanthree, I have been culpable of putting forward the theory that some trolls are Ar-chant stooges but you`re probably right. It is just paranoia born out of frustration. As KA says, the unfitness for purpose of the "system" hampers free dialogue between contributors. I expect in a couple of weeks time I`ll get about 30 rejection e-mails to which I may not reply.

Spot on, Wise One. Ref reporting abuse, I recall only trying to do that once, after severely nasty stuff from a troll. The "system" told me it had already been reported and my complaint duly disappeared. The offending item did not. Presumably the "other" person`s complaint was rejected; "Reason-other". :-(

I can generally understand if someone is saying something offensive, otherwise what's the point of comments being moderated. But this is a two-way forum; we get given snippets of 'news' (I say that in jest) and we respond, only our ability to respond is severely hampered by a process that does not work. I'm not 100% convinced that the trolls on this site are ar-chant employees looking to stir up interest in the sites, purely because for that to be correct we would be able to respond to the trolls!! People only take so much before they think s*d this and go some place else. If ar-chant do not want us saying things (heaven knows why we can't even mention our injured left-back by name, is it now illegal?!) then take away the comments section.

Panic not Algarve I am of the belief that there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes whilst we speak!! Hughton has said that there will be plenty of activity over the coming three or four weeks and I do think we will be pleasantly surprised. McNally will be keeping things very close to his chest; our patience will be rewarded. Try to stay positive; I have confidence in Hughton and his ability to motivate the players. OTBC

Forget all the argy bargy about archant....they need to keep the club sweet or their material dries up! What worries me, as an ex toiler at the goal face of football journalism, is that all we are seeing is bulk filler pre-season pap, and no suggestion of a new striker to come in and take the weight off Holt. Holt is only good for about 70 minutes a game, and isnt fast enough for the lone striker role. Morrison just isnt good enough, Vaughan, injury prone and unproven, Jackson, a good back up, likewise Martin. If we are to survive we need a 15 to 20 goal a season striker. Please God, McNally is working his mojo behind the scenes!!!

In response to Sports Desk Pete saying that some comments are held in a queue until they are checked by moderators, it is still utter, utter tosh. I have had a couple of emails from yourselves regarding lengthy comments I have made. The emails tell me that my comments were 'rejected' by yourselves without an explanation as to why, which is especially annoying as they contained nothing inappropriate! It's one thing a comment being ethered because a word happened to include a string of letters that spells out something rude, but to actually have a HUMAN (who is also 'employed') physically reject comments that do not contain explicit content is beyond ridiculous. This is meant to be a community based website for those who wish to keep in touch with the going on's with the football club we support! I suppose that's fine, as long as we don't say anything! Pathetic

And Brewer, that was exactly my point yesterday in the academy coach article, people such as yourself post positive, constructive and interesting comments and for some reason they get ethered, then people like Speedy then obviously my evil twin Billythenotsosuccessfulbookie and Ged get through with whatever comments they please, and if in Speedy's instance with swearing and aggressive language used too! Perhaps somewhat unrelated, but I'm hearing he's very hands on in his coaching style, which I love. I was half expecting him to be one of those people who sit back and analyse but thankfully that's not the case, I love a manager who is more direct and personal with the players!

Zebbee, comments containing words that are flagged up by the system as being inappropriate are held back automatically in a "comments waiting moderation" queue that we check - followed by approval or rejection. Sadly the system will hold back any banned phrases that are part of an otherwise innocent word.

I think norwich should drop this matter as it appears to be just hearsay and wishful thinking. Curtis is happy at blues and if he did leave he is good enough to go to a bigger club. Norwich can't afford him and we do not need norwich cast offs as as our manager is doing well with new signings.
