Norwich City boss Chris Hughton directs operations today in the Canaries' 3-2 opening pre-season friendly defeat to Hertha Berlin in Gleisdorf, Austria.

Chris Hughton pushed the positives after his Norwich City side slipped to a 3-2 defeat in an entertaining pre-season opener against Hertha Berlin in Gleisdorf on Saturday evening.
The Canaries’ chief had no complaints over the result, after Elias Kachunga’s hat-trick had proved the difference with City’s second half arrival James Vaughan grabbing an encouraging brace.
Hughton revealed Steve Morison (ankle) and David Fox (leg) both sat out the game as an injury precaution in southern Austria, but the bigger picture was no fresh concerns following a gruelling week and the benefits of a more than competitive first outing of the summer against the former Bundesliga outfit.
“It was a very good run out but what we had was a team who are two weeks ahead of us in terms of preparations,” said Hughton. “They start their league campaign two weeks before us so it was a good test. We were able to make 11 changes at half-time and we wanted to get a bit of rhythm of course but I’ll wait until I get the physical data from the coaches to assess how well the boys have done (in this game). We have come through with no new injuries and it has been a good week for us.
“We need to take this on now for the Celtic game and approach that in the same vein, look to improve on the fitness level. Of course it is disappointing to lose a game of football but I would rather lose them at this stage of the pre-season than later on.”
Hughton admitted City paid for a sluggish start with the lively Kachunga calmly slotting underneath the advancing John Ruddy in the 12th minute before beating the England keeper from longer range two minutes later before Vaughan’s arrival triggered a second half fightback.
“We knew before the game about the quality they had from what they did last year. They’ve had a good pre-season, speaking to their coach, and they were ahead of us fitness-wise so it was a good test,” he said. “We’ve come out of it unscathed and look forward to Tuesday. When we got two goals back I felt we could perhaps go on and win the game. I was a little disappointed at the silly penalty that we gave away, which is something you don’t like to see. We were certainly better in that second half and I felt we were at least capable of drawing the game.”

Thankyou for that support, Canarypostergirl; I shall always wear it! ;-). Seriously, though, I have had this battle with the system for some time, it only gets worse when you think it might be getting better. Unfortunately, my persistence seems to irk a few new posters and it`s a thankless task much of the time. As you say, the flow of discussion is disrupted and mars much of the enjoyment of footy discussion with fellow Canaries (and sometimes others, eg Birmingham fans recently). I enjoy the chat and banter with folk on these boards and it`s a pity when worthies like Kent Anglian give up out of frustration. But I`m not going to do that. Sorry folks! OTBC.

I swear that this site is getting worse with its "ethering" rather than better!! There is no rhyme or reason to what gets through and what gets ditched. Either way it makes joining with the other bloggers very frustrating when you just don't know what will appear. Brew don't let anyone stop you badgering Archant. It really is time they got this dinosaur into the 21st century so we can enjoy sharing our thoughts!! OTBC

Looks like DocOhNo spotted it too, bd2. It was bad enough that it appeared once, but it was allowed a second time. If we`d ignored it, would it have gone away? Doubt it. The definition of what is "offensive" on these boards is aberrant.

It tells you how good dipsticks are if they are obviously concerned about playing Walsham le willows, even though it could be the only trophy the might win this season. I missed the comment you refer to about Hoots but if that is the case there is no place on here for that sort of thing, best to ignore it and let it go away!

Ded Sterile, as promised, I had a go at posting something to Ar-chant`s lead paper in 1p5wich. An innocuous comment about the forthcoming Suffolk Premier Cup match with Walsham le Willows. Ethered. What does that continue to tell us?

Zak to Leicester? That`s him stuck in the Champ until he retires. He could`ve done better than that, surely? I wonder why he left NCFC? No offer, no acceptable offer or he just wanted to? Ded Sterile, are you sure you`re not an alter-ego of the Doyenne of Depilation - Sian? You`re not trying to pull the wool over our eyes, are ewe,Zak to Leicester? Biggest positive may well turn out to be not selling or loaning Vaughan out to Brum. Let's hope he can kick on from here. Pity Morison didn't get a run out don't you think, Algave?

A good workout for the squad and a good opportunity for Hughton to assess our strengths and weaknesses. And lets not forget that the players are getting used to different training methods and team strategies; so all in all a good first pre-season game in my view. We will build on this and I am sure with one or two more additions will be more than ready for when the season begins. OTBC

It's unfortunate that archant doesn't show us the respect we deserve and rid us of the trolls.. Thats their problem... But what WE can do as a collective group of NCFC fans is ignore them, don't feed them at all, end of... The brewer is right, they are here to stir up emotions. They envy us and our club. Please ignore them!!!

There has to be some sort of "Trollwatch", blackdog. There is another troll who makes overtly trisca (anagram) comments which Ar-chant let through. This is my last Crusade (no offence intended to saracens). Apropos of nothing, Kerchunga sounds like noises from the Sebcolimpix Tills! Btw, bd2, you have just committed the same folly as I! OTBC.

There`s no doubting the veracity of the defensive concerns. What is in doubt is the presence of any real concern at all, beyond the desire to crow with delight should things work out badly. Genuine NCFC fans express the same worries for diametrically opposed motives. I find it difficult to understand WHY somebody so `anti` feels it necessary to troll in this way. Except the obvious one; envy. Or simple (good word) attention-seeking. I wonder what Zak is up to? Spurs, to replace Ledley King? Norwich, to replace himself? Aston Vanilla, to rejoin the man who released him as a free agent?

The troll does have a small piece of truth amid his usual rubbish. We do need to strengthen the defence. We haven't replaced Zak and that gives us weaker defensive setup than last season. Ruddy has voiced his concerns, I just hope we can bed someone in before the first Prem game.

Took me a few minutes to work out what you were getting at Marine, but I guess you are referring to the initial Table. I suppose your idea would have the merit that you could see the relative seniority of all the teams before we start. But we can see that by reference to last years final Tables. This is a whole new season and we all start from scratch. Nobody has kicked a ball yet, so the Table is listed only to show who the contenders are for the coming season. Therefore all teams start with equal records - all zeros - and are equally placed in the league. When two or more teams have an equal record, the appear in alphabetical order by default.

The main positive is that we only conceded 3 goals. We are going to be thankful at only conceding 3 many, many times this season. Sort the defence out Whoton! I told him that the defence was the problem when we spoke the other week. He'd be foolish to ignore someone with my understanding of the game. Whoton, Whoton, sort it out!!

It may only be a friendly but it gives Hughton a chance to see what's what and Vaughan looked sharp. On the other hand we let in 3 which emphasizes what many of us have been banging on about, we have to strengthen the defence!

That is right he is on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach where he has come up through the ranks. He is only 20 and has been with them since 2009. Has been out on loan at VfL Osnabrück where he scored 10 goals in 17 games. Looks like Hertha got a good loan here. Certainly a prospect in the making - maybe try and get him here for a loan season in the Prem ?
