Chris Hughton confirmed after tonight’s goalless friendly at MK Dons he is mulling over a loan switch to Nottingham Forest for central defender Dani Ayala.
The Spanish youth international is wanted by the Championship club on a season-long deal, but Hughton revealed he has yet to make a final decision whether to sanction a move to the City Ground.
“At the moment nothing is confirmed,” he said. “There has been that interest and we’ll just see where that goes but nothing has yet been confirmed. It is an enquiry – that is all I would say.
“We’ll certainly know more over the next day or two and then we have got a decision to make at the club on what we do on that one. I have to make that decision but I have five centre halves at the moment.
“He is a good young talent, he is young and he an injury last year that restricted his games. I think from memory he only played six or seven times in the first team and he is one that we would like to see how he develops but that is for the next day or two.”
Hughton was prepared to offload midfielder Andrew Crofts to Brighton earlier this week with the Welsh international re-joining his old club on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Hughton admitted he was unable to guarantee Crofts regular football after the midfielder had slipped down the pecking order during City’s successful Premier League campaign.
“I think it is a good move perhaps for both the player and the club,” he said. “He was very restricted in the number of games he played last season. He is the type of player who wants to be playing week in, week out.
“Although it wasn’t in my period of time here I think we would like to thank him for the service he gave this club over the last couple of seasons.
“He served us very well, in both promotion seasons, but that is one that has moved on now and we wish him all the best but we have to concentrate very much on what we are trying to do now in the future.”
Hughton was satisfied with another useful fitness work out at the League One promotion hopefuls.
“These are a good side,” he said. “They play a very good brand of football and they do it very, very well. I think we got an awful lot out of tonight’s fixture. We perhaps nullified each other.”

For example Brew, the comment I just posted was vitrioled, so, I repeated it, re-read it, then changed the word "sn*tch" for "nick" and it went through. This has happened a few times. I had a similar experience the other day and had to think of another word for r***rd...

If it doesn't go through, edit it the second time round Brew! :) I don't view Owen as a 'big name on the way down', more as a very talented player who could be very useful in certain situations. I'm not suggesting we build our squad around him for the next 10 years, but, someone of his calibre could nick us some very important goals this season which may make the difference between staying up or going down. I still don't think we'll sign him, but, I would be far from unhappy if we did!

I have some sympathy with MBA Marine's point of view here, you need a mix of experience and enthusiasm, which I think that we are getting now. Already we seem to be a little more soild when on the back-foot but we still neded the sparkle at the front.

I understand CDU and Andy's points. But I dont look at Owen as a superstar name on big bucks, he is passed that. I see him as a fantastic member of a squad someone everybit if not more valuable to the training pitch than the match pitch, a super sub for match days. What lambo's ethos misses is that youth and willing can be headless chickens without wise heads. when the game is in our grasp NCFC are great but when we're over run we can loose shape and take up the hack it away method. Youth are the future but without the previous youth who are now the present and waining into past they will never make it, and if we only aim for youth then we will never have a comlete squad.

I agree Andy. We shouldn't abandon Lambo's policy of recruiting hungry players that are on the way up, rather than 'big names' on the way down. Players like Peters, Channon and maybe Royle served us well in past, but others like Osgood and Cottee were a disaster.

If NCFC want to build for the future, Owen is not the man we want. Perhaps we should just leave it all to CH and be patient and do a Cpl Jones - 'don't panic' in the meantime.

The odds on Skybet for Owen joining us are continuing to shorten. Was 10s yesterday morning, 6s yesterday afternoon, and 2's at the moment. Must be something to this rumour as dont really think it was my fiver which brought the odds down! As to concerns over him being injury prone, perhaps a deal could be done on bonuses for actually playing....?

No apology needed Scrim ;-) I`ve been planting some silly jokes about place names lately which are much sillier than your rose reference (which I was V slow picking up on). Once, a simple typo in the EDP, "puck" instead of "pluck", led to a full-blown International forum on "A Midsummer Night`s Dream". There`re some weird people get on these boards! I`d rather we kept Pibull Vaughan, too, for similar reasons to yours. As Swiss has said, it`s getting to the time the squad needs to be settled a bit. OTBC.

My bad, apologies Brew & Swiss. It wasn't an anagram, pun or even slightly intelligent quip. Purely idiotic remark in reference to aforementioned rose. I generally tend to give back what I receive. I think Owen is extremely unlikely, I just happened to be discussing the prospect of him coming to Norwich at work and then noticed someone mention the same thing on here. I think it would be awesome, but, I'd gladly eat my hat if it happened. Also I'd rather Vaughan stayed and we assessed what he was capable of before we do any switch or transfer with any another player. We couldn't guarantee they'd perform or stay injury free any better...

Hmmmm. Vaughan to Huddersfield? I could cope with that if a certain Huddersfield striker replaces him, otherwise not. Is Michael Owen a real prospect? apart from anything else, his injury record legislates against it. As Swiss has said, it`s fair enough we haven`t finished making the sausage yet, but we`re still shopping for the ingredients. I just hope there IS an ingredients listing to shop from. BTW, Scrim, it was Swiss, not me who asked if your wacky flower reference was an anagram. I`ve been trying to work out what you were referring to! Leeds fans see their team thro` (white) rose-tinted glasses? Brain on a go-slow.

Creepy MBA Marine & Zebbee, I was just having a discussion with a friend at work regarding Owen and how I think a move for him to Carra Rud would be fantastically beneficial for both player & club. After talking it through, the largest problem seemed to be whether Owen would stomach the wage drop for a decent footballing prospect over a salary he'd be more used to elsewhere.

Wrt to transfer rumours, I tried to post this this morning but my internet connection went down. At that point, on SkyBet we were 10 to 1 to sign Michael Owen with Villa 7s and Stoke odds on favourites at 8 to 11. Well, I've got my internet connection back. Villa and Stoke odds are unchanged but now we've come in to 6s. Very interesting.

The Xanadu thing was only a joke, continuing the Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Titch theme started by Wiv. The Legend of Xanadu was a `60s hit by that aforementioned pop act. Captaincozmik spotted the Coleridge connection! Also known as "Shang-tu", it is indeed a place; an ancient city in South-East Mongolia. Another song, just plain "Xanadu", was a later collaboration between Electric Light Orchestra and that doyenne of lady Norfolk referesses, Olivia Newton-Flotman. Wiv, that whole Fingringhoe thing is a follow up to your Sydney Adelaide jape. You have to connect it with that ancienr earthwork near Malting Green. All will become clear. Maybe some "pretty flowers" will help? ;-)

Ayala has given away some penalties but I think that was more from reckless touching than pulling down. He just needs to work out how close you can go before the automatic-dive-sensors flip in. I think that Ward is over hesitant about triggering a dive and so tends to hold back and get beaten. It is about getting the timing spot on. Zak was good at that as are Russ Martin and Ryan Bennett. Isn't Xanadu a place rather than a person?

If my memory serves me right, in the few games Ayala played he gave away 2 penalties. so if he is going to give a penalty away every 2.5 games a loan spell is probably what he needs. Apart from reckless pulling down opponants in the penalty box he is a stylish and solid defender.

It may be that we have to lose a CB because of the squad restrictions but I agree with all the posters that Dani is not the one. The midfield & winger department seems well supplied now. As Brewer subtly points out, we seem one FB short of a set. Up front, Holt, Vaughan and Jackson are OK for me, Chris Martin and van Morison seem to be just short of the level but top strikers tend to be few and far between and expensive. I don't quite get the Jordan Rhoades saga, were we ever really interested? No goals at MK Dons, that's not a good recommendation.
