Norwich City defender Russell Martin proclaimed himself “absolutely delighted” after penning a new three-year contract at Carrow Road.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The 26-year-old has been a cornerstone of the Canaries’ success in their last three seasons and new manager Chris Hughton had no hesitation in rewarding Martin with a new deal.

“It’s brilliant. I’m extremely delighted, my family and I are really happy around here,” said Martin, whose previous contract ran out in 2014. “It’s a pleasure and an honour to be playing for a club of this size and stature.

“The last three years have been brilliant, and hopefully the next three can be just as good. As soon as the club spoke about it (signing a new contract), it didn’t take long to get sorted because I’m so happy here personally.

“We’ve got a great bunch of lads so I’m really pleased to get it sorted so early on. I can now come back in pre-season raring to go.”

Martin believes the future is bright for the Canaries under Hughton and is looking forward to working under the former Birmingham boss.

“I think it’s a great appointment for the football club,” he told the club’s official website. “I think he’s done extremely well wherever he’s been, at Newcastle and at Birmingham, then of course as a coach and assistant manager at previous clubs.

“I think if you look at what he did at Birmingham especially, with the size of the squad and amount of games they had to play, he’s done a brilliant job and he’s bringing a good coaching staff with him. So it all bodes well and it’s all positive for the football club.

“The board have made a decision and as players we all welcome it, and hopefully given a bit of time we can all work well together.”

Despite only being installed as manager yesterday, Hughton believes Martin’s performances in the Premier League thoroughly merit a new contract.

“Having just been appointed as manager I’m delighted that one of my first actions is to offer Russ this new three year deal,” he said. “He’s had a fantastic couple of seasons here since joining the Club in January 2010 and this new deal shows what’s he’s done for the Club over that time. He’s been an ever-present and has shown he’s a versatile player playing at both right-back and in the centre last season.

“Russ deserves this new contract and I’m delighted that he will be here for the next three years.”

  • There are brains at work at Carra Rud which might still prevent post-abandonment disaster. McN is a cute cookie. This is a great move. And CH will be the perfect foil. I have a good feeling about this......

  • blackdog2, I have more than my fair share of being ethered. My stuff gets through because I am a sad old "buzzard" with too much time on his hands, so I can afford to be persistent! Troublesome1, if there was a real risk of IC being a "mole" for Lambert, I think Mr. McN would have him off on "gardening leave" and Pronto! I nurse the hope that IC will stay as McN says he wishes him to. You never know, Norwich might be where IC WANTS to be-he`s spent a long time here before, after all....... Canarygirl I hope you`re right and IC, at least, stays. Do you think there were signs that the "Holy Trinity" was beginning to fracture? I cannot guess what`s really happening; I veer from naive optimism to conspiracy theory and Macchiavellian machinations and back by the minute! OTBC. PS. IC & CH are old colleagues from Spurs days, too......

  • MB despite what we are reading in the papers and the tweets etc., I would have thought IC and GK would have resigned by now if they really wanted to leave. I could still be proved wrong but something tells me they don't want to link up with Lambert at Villa. After the Leicester game Lambert did make some strange team selections which, in hindsight, suggests to me that all was not well. Lets wait and see what happens. I do think Hughton will be a great appointment for the club and we will flourish under his care. OTBC

  • I totally agree with you Brewer. I really do believe the squad will stay together. Already we have Russ, Fox, Ward and Jackson on board why would any of the players want to leave. This is an exciting new era for City and I'm really delighted with Hughton's appointment. And I think Russ will do his bit to encourage the other players to stay.

  • All seems rather strange that Lambert didn't take Culverhouse and Karsa with him when he joined Villa. Maybe it has to do with compensation and the like I don't know. We may never know what has really been going on except that the team suffered because of it. Thankfully we came good at the end. I think the change of management is very timely!!

  • At this point in time, nobody is going anywhere. So come on Mr McN, and get that lad Whitbread back in the fold. If Lambretta man wants any of the other players who fought for the cause last season, let him show his hand. Yes, there may be one or two of his favourites available, and without naming names, let us see if they come into his new thinking.

  • cdu, Gorbalschev is already reported as enquiring about Kyle `Grasshopper` Naughton @ Spurs. Of course, if rumours are true, `Arry might be resigning from Spurs, so PL might prefer that grasshopper stays put. Surely it`s easy to get out of a brand new 3-year contract with a mediocre club like Villa? Anyway, it is widely tipped that Lerner is soon to convert Villa to baseball; the "Bodymoor Bluesox". The ink`s not even dry on the contract yet, PL, smudge it! ;-)

  • I actually think that non of the current squad will end up at Villa. Given the way City played after the defeat to Leicester suggests to me that all was not well between Lambert and the players. And let's face it, he did make some strange team selections at that time!! I do believe with Martin's new contract and the three contract options recently activated we will still have the full compliment come start of the new season

Hostas may flourish in the shade but it`s time Cully got some sunshine. OTBC. PS: were some of the team selections and `injuries` a way of keeping his next year`s targets in the shade?

  • Cutty, I wouldn't say I have the lasso of truth, its more a gut feeling and the more we look back over the past several months, the jigsaw puzzle is beginning to fit together. It seems to me that there has been a major falling out between Lambert, his trusty assistants, the board and most importantly the players. And that's why I don't think anyone, including Holt, will be going to Villa. And as we stand at the moment, IC and GK may be staying; it would be fantastic if they did!!

  • If IC had expressed a wish to stay at Carra Rud then David McNally would've said so at the CH press conference. Believe me, IC will have much better career prospects sticking with Lambo, in the same way that his old full back partner, Mark Bowen, sticks with Mark Hughes. Plus he'll get a big pay increase at Villa.

  • Hi, Soglio. Glad you`re no longer a Hughto-sceptic! I hope you weren`t one of the 2% of fans unhappy with the appointment! Most of the antis were probably Geds (plural, not possessive). Just as Lambo has insight into our squad, so Cully may have insight into that insight, if you get my meaning. So IF IC is on board with CH, that insight could be converted into "firewalling" likely targets for poaching? Idle conjecture. I think the "Bowkett Wobble" tells a lot about how swift and decisive this has all been. That "disaster" never happened and I suspect, with benefit of hindsight, it was never going to. McNally didn`t expect PL not to leave! Russell Martin is the sort of strong, steady character who will be the catalyst for others staying with us, too, hopefully. I have a good feeling about this......

IC is one of my all-yime fav players and I'd love to keep him here, but realistically he's Lambo's right-hand man and needs to be released ASAP.
