As Norwich City players returned for pre-season training today, Birmingham centre-back Curtis Davies was again being linked with a move to Carrow Road.
One national newspaper claimed the Canaries were prepared to offer striker James Vaughan on a season-long loan to the Blues as part of the deal.
New manager Chris Hughton is reported to be keen for 27-year-old Davies to join him at Norwich.
Hughton has already taken his backroom staff to Colney with England goalkeeping coach Dave Watson the latest recruit.
Davies is valued at about £4m, while Vaughan was a £1.5m capture by former City boss Paul Lambert from Everton last summer.
In an injury-plagued season, however, Vaughan made just six first team appearances for City, starting his only Premier League game at Blackburn in April.

Only going from his Wikipedia entry, it seems Curtis Davies did not feel he got a fair chance to prove his worth under the Martin O`Neill regime. AV were rumoured to have paid "£8 -10million" for him. Seems to have performed OK for the Blues and scored a few goals. It seems to be a growing fashion for managers to "raid" their previous clubs. Not surprisingly, that can cause ill-feeling between the respective fans. I wonder if anybody else really cares, though?

Be a coup if Hughton can nab him. Fernando Torres (during his Liverpool days) once described him as the best centre back he's played against. Always done a job for us, was sad to see him go. Be a steal at £5m.

I would have thought Whittaker to have been an emplyee rather than an asset per see? As an emplyee, he has the right to not continue working for the new company, the contarct of employment is invalid I would think?

I agree with you 'Lordyfan' - the Steven Whittaker situation is looking messy. I am certainly no legal expert but if SW has an unexpired contract with Rangers FC that have now gone into liquidation, surely this must classed as an asset of that company. If Rangers Newco have purchased the assets and assuming they have continued to pay the players, then they must have a case for compensation, regardless of the Newco situation with the SFA. It looks like us and other clubs have been a bit opportunistic here and may come unstuck. Might need to start looking for another new defender or be prepared to pay some compensation. Massive sympathy for Rangers fans though - must be much worse for them.

Interesting that theBBC website reported the blocking of Whittaker's registration nearly 24 hours ago, still nothing here. Everybody except Rangers says they're clear to go. If so I hope both the players and clubs sue Rangers for loss of wages and in the clubs' case loss of the player. Rangers have a long history of bullying other clubs and it's time they were stood up to.

Admire your defiance BCFC, but what you value him @ + what he goes for, are completely different things. At the end of the day players are worth whatever their clubs will sell them for. Hence us acquiring Mr. Holt's services from Shrewsbury for £400,000 + recently turning down an offer of £5m for the same player !

Re Davies: Yes please, he's class. Re Wesley, let CH sort it out. PL rarely said a thing on contracts, so any news we might get would be an improvement. I think I've seen Vaughan play about an hour and I've not missed a home game in over 25 years so cannot be constructive. Re Archant: it's truly awful. Repeat: Awful. OTBC

Probably right about the beach, JMH. None of the 'Columnists' have reported for weeks. I accept that it is close season but there is a real paucity of information and what has come out has very little originality. Stephen Whittaker situation looks like becoming a bit of a mess. We should hear more about that on this site by next Saturday!!

£4 million your having a laugh, more like double that. we,ve sold two players recently and have no need to sell unless it's a no brainer. £500k more than we paid for him is a no go. He went to the Vile for £9 million so there's the ball park. Don't need Vaughan either, just signed Lovenkrands, unless someone else is leaving??

KA, I too think it would be good for Vaughan to get some regular games under his belt and, if we get Davies as part of the deal then great.Unfortunately, at this stage, this is just a rumour from a national. I hope the reason this "news" is so late getting here is that the EDP would rather print something concrete rather than the scraps that fall from the transfers table.

I think it would be a great idea for James to go out on loan for a season in the Championship and get some regular games under his belt. Maybe that would give us a 'new player' for the season following. Bit disappointing that the London papers (Daily Mirror, this one I think) seem to get the news, which is then rehashed several hours later by our local hacks. Before this report there had been nothing on the EDP website about NCFC since Friday!!

Wilbraham commented to press this week that he was released on the expectation of another striker joining the club and pushing him down the pecking order. Losing Vaughan in an exchange (even on loan) would definitely leave a very big shortfall up front, especially as Chris Martin is widely tipped to be on the way out too.

Curtis would be a good signing to help strengthen our back line, however I would like to keep hold of Vaughan, if we can keep him fit I believe he could be a great asset along side the horse!
