Norwich City manager Chris Hughton is reported to have turned his attentions to Sporting Lisbon striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Sky Sports has reported that the Canaries are looking to make a move for the 23-year-old but may face competition from Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Portuguese journalist João Ruela tweeted yesterday: “Norwich offered €10M for Van Wolfswinkel and is waiting for a reply till Sunday. Sporting Lisbon is looking to sell him.”

The Dutch international has recently been linked with a move to Newcastle with his agent Lous Laros quoted in the Newcastle Journal: “I won’t name specific clubs as that is a private matter, but what I will say is there is big interest in Ricky from England.

“I have passed on this information to Sporting and it is up to them to come to any agreement and then we could negotiate.

“Can something happen this month? In football, you just never know what might happen. We are laid-back about the situation.

“Ricky is like any player in that he is ambitious and the Premier League is a fantastic place. He is happy for the moment in Lisbon. There have been reports that he has requested a transfer, but that is not true.

“I know the club well. I spoke to them a lot in the summer when they tried to buy Luuk de Jong, who is also our player. They are not in such a good position right now in the league, but that is a good club.”

  • It looks a bit of a game, tbh. I have no problem with the multi million bids for Graham, Hooper etc, its a good thing. We are competing with bigger teams though, so we're spreading the net wide. Hughton knows his stuff, and most of the players linked with us will add to the team. Any of the players linked with us, bar maybe Kamara, looking at his record, will do just that! Norwich have to cast the net wider, because as we have seen, the bigger boys poach the top guys from the collective scout finds. Spread the net wide enough, and we will get what we need. Maybe a few red herrings are being punted.

Can we really go through another transfer window desperate for a striker and end up with another goalkeeper? Once was ridiculous but twice..........

Seriously though, is this all happening a bit late? Also, there seems to be a scatter-gun approach in play. A telling comment "not in such a good position in the League" - was that a reference to Newcastle or Norwich? If there is any truth in this, presumably City thinks £8million for RvW is OK, but £6 million for Hooper is OTT. RvW has a nice ring to it - a bit like that other Dutch chap at ManU. Name escapes me; scores a few. OTBC.

I am sure the City board will be pleased to get to next Friday morning without spending any money on a new recruit. Yes we've had a terrible run, but apart from the Newcastle and Liverpool games we played well. Yes we need to start winning again, but give Hughton and McNally a bit of leeway. I haven't seen any of the recently rumoured strikers in action apart from Danny Graham and I guess neither have most of the commentators on this site. I agree that we desperately need another striker or 2 but I'm confident the management are working intelligently behind the scenes and personally, I think that Hughton is a better long term bet for us than Lambert.
