Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy has denied national newspaper reports claiming he is a potential target for former boss Paul Lambert at Aston Villa.

The Daily Mirror claims Ruddy could replace Shay Given as Villa’s No 1. Given endured a difficult time with the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2012, where they conceded nine goals in their three defeats.

Ruddy has rubbished the speculation, posting on Twitter: “With regards to these rumours that everyone is tweeting me about I don’t know where they have come from, I have no desire to leave NCFC.”

The player who replaced the injured Ruddy in England’s Euro 2012 squad, 19-year-old Birmingham ’keeper Jack Butland, is being tipped as a potential big-money capture for his former manager, Chris Hughton, at Carrow Road.

According to the same story Hughton “has gone back to his previous club Birmingham and made a firm inquiry for Butland” suggesting the Canaries’ new boss is prepared to pay £4m for his services.

Hughton worked with England Under-21 international Butland at St Andrew’s during his year in charge. The young ’keeper has never played a first team game for the Blues but made 24 appearances on loan to League Two club Cheltenham last season.

Butland was brought into the England squad after Ruddy broke a finger on his first day of training with the national team.

Southampton are also reported to be chasing Butland’s signature but have not met Birmingham’s valuation.

  • I agree Dubai, should concentrate on sorting Holt situation and getting Naughton back. Both would feel like new signings the way things stand at moment & both the players & fans would be given a boost with some positive news on those two

  • Newspapers need to sell copy, and the Cricket season does not engendered such passion, derision, or stupidity, and these hacks know little enough about Cycling or Tennis to keep the chip paper full. No-one outside Birmingham - or Cheltenham - had heard of Butland prior to Ruddy's finger injury. Forster is a better 'keeper.

  • Good news from JR. All this inactivity and rumour is getting a bit tiring - hope they all get back to it in the next couple of weeks. What we want to see is new signings ! Holt & Naughton should be top of the 'To Do' list.

  • Obviously guys, you are going on the games Butland has played so far, but believe me, he is going to be a very special goalkeeper indeed. Probably already better than Jed and Declan. However, I agree, the money could be better spent elsewhere. Naughton is certainly worth the 4 million Villa are reported to be interested in paying, and for god's sake give Holt the extra year he wants. At 34 he may not be able to play like he does now, but it will cost us even more to replace him. Players like him are very difficlut to find.

  • I suppose it`s no more than tabloid rumour-mongering, happycanary? Keeping Naughton would be a boost-is it likely? Holt, too, if he WANTS to stay. What about Mad Marc? Is he back in the fold? Ruddy is certain for the moment of being 1st choice keeper @ Norwich. He`ll be true to his word and stay, I hope. OTBC.

  • How ridiculous! Have I just read; 'The young ’keeper has never played a first team game for the Blues but made 24 appearances on loan to League Two club Cheltenham last season.'. So despite CH not thinking he was ready for a first team game in the championship he is going to spend £4m on him to bring him to Norwich to player in premiership. Hmmmmm. We've already got two great young keepers in Rudd & Steer. Think the £4m would be well spent elsewhere. Great to hear Ruddy say he has no desire to leave NCFC either. He was one of the first to say he was looking forward to working with CH next season on Twitter.

  • Just the sort of talk that Shay Given doesn't want after his poor show at the Euro's. Bet he feels lower than low, PL needs to get him revved up for the new season, NOT.

  • Good grief its getting worse by the minute!!! Thankfully Ruddy has publicly stated his position and thank goodness for that. Lets just wait until Hughton gets back from his holidays and then hopefully we will have some more realistic news on tansfers etc!!! And for goodness sake ignore all the rumour mill drivel because it is exactly that, drivel.

  • To me, signing another young, unproven, `keeper makes no sense; we already have Jed & Dec, both of whom have experience at a higher level than Butland. Ruddy is ours! Hands off.
