Staying in the Premier League is still the number one target for Norwich City next season, insists defender Russell Martin.

The Scotland international has played a key part in the Canaries’ success story over the past three seasons, and missed only five matches last season as they clinched 12th place in the top flight.

And with the big kick-off under new manager Chris Hughton just over five weeks away, Martin believes staying at the highest level of the English game is the top priority for players and staff.

“I think it’s well documented the second season’s extremely tough for any team so for us as a group of players, we’d love to build on last season and the way we played,” said Martin. “We want to set our stall out the same way but I think the most important thing is staying in the league. I think if you ask the majority of fans, they’d say exactly the same. It’s about consolidating and making this club a Premier League team for years to come.”

Martin, speaking to Talksport on the third day of pre-season training, welcomed skipper Grant Holt’s new contract as a major boost to City’s chances of achieving that aim.

Top scorer for the past three seasons, Holt clinched a three-year deal with the Canaries last week, running to 2015.

The 31-year-old had asked for a transfer, sparking more than six weeks of uncertainty over his future.

“It was a good boost for the club just before pre-season started. The big man’s staying, so it’s really good news,” said Martin.

“He had a lot of suitors because of the season he had, well, the last three years he’s had, and he’s a big character in and around the dressing room as well. It was important for us to keep him and thankfully the management and the board have managed to do that.”

Martin also welcomed the arrival of defender Steve Whittaker and midfielder Jacob Butterfield.

“We’ve made a few good additions already and I’m sure the manager’s got his sights on other players,” said Martin. “It always picks up the squad, keeps people on their toes. Competition is really healthy.

“As footballers, you have to embrace competition and use it to improve yourself.”

Martin said City’s first few days of training held no terrors but he expects it to get tougher during next week’s trip to Austria.

“We’ve been back a few days and it’s been a nice light intro back into it,” he said. “The boys are out nice and early and we’re just looking forward to the next couple of weeks – and getting the hard work out of the way.

“I don’t think it’s dreaded as much as it used to be. At a lot of clubs now, you go in for your test and get your body fats done. All the boys were all right and I’m usually OK on the body fats, I was quite happy with mine.

“They were testing our leg strength compared to the end of last season and a few other things. It’s not too bad. It’s when you go on your tour in the second week, that’s when it gets a bit harder.”

  • Thanks again, Talksport. Apropos of nothing, I see 1p5wich have renamed their Britannia Stand The East of England Co-operative Funeral Services Stand. ;-)

  • Sorry to have misled anyone. As Timbo said, `twas a jest on the dark side of the Stadium of Fading Light aka Portman Road aka The Stygian Stadium. Nearby, Charon makes his living from ferrying the dead over the River Styx, aka Orwell to Hades aka Pin Mill. ;-)

  • Richard, this week Russel Martin, next week it will be another player saying the same thing with a little journalistic tweaking. The same thing happened last season, all the players said the same thing, nothing particularly newsworthy. If it wasnt the players it was PL saying how brilliant they were and how they had given him no trouble.Norwich City have never been very good at giving supporters any well timed news and their handling of the Holt transfer saga was dreadful.

  • Seems like Russell is now the official unofficial media spokesperson for NCFC? I think it's good to have a bit of personal feedback on what the player are feeling and experiencing... It's that or silence (apart from all the confusion of 'when is a transfer not a transfer - when it involves Rangers')

  • BTW, I`d been given to believe our priority was to be knocked out of the League & FA Cups as soon as possible and go for relegation. What a blessing insight is. So many sincere thanks for this penetrative journalism. OTBC.

  • That is a pretty good summary, Trevor! Sorry if my Ar-chant attitude offends, Ghana. My already low opinion of their journalistic standards is further soured by repeated "ethering". I mostly visit the sites to read the opinions of the "Usual Suspects" which are usually far more insightful than the base articles. I didn`t know I had any fans. That`s a "First". Thanks! OTBC.

  • Activity this close season seems fairly quiet all round, other than at QPR. I'm expecting a busy late July and early August for transfers (both in and out), with a striker high on my "must have" list as we need more options. As for 1p5wish, who cares!

  • I think the Fading Stadium thing was a Swissism first Timbo! Well, at least in the context of Pottyloo Rd. Apparently, a tablet of stone in recognition of Jewell`s contribution to 1p5wich has been built into the Stygian Stadium. Just another P***k in the Wall. ;-)

  • Come on Brewer!! You know I am a fan of yours. But give these Archant guys a break. Not all of us listen to Talksport, and other news feeders. Some of us only have this website for NCFC news. In anycase, am sure you enjoy their articles really, as you are always on here, just like me. And also, we all get ethered every now and again. It is all for a good cause, although ocassionally they will ether something they shouldnt. Has happened to me too, but they are human. Still I am a fan of yours!

  • Same what Ghana Dom said, I get all my news either from here or twitter. I'm rather thankful it's gone all quiet now after everthing that has happened. We're in bit of a quiet patch hence maybe the filler in articles which I don't mind, I'm sure the weeks ahead we will see more signings and news.
