Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni praised the performance of Norwich City’s Wes Hoolahan despite a 1-0 home defeat by Greece in Dublin.

Hoolahan won his second cap for his country – four years after the first – when he appeared as a half-time substitute at the Aviva Stadium.

But while Trapattoni was disappointed with the result, he was pleased with the players he brought into the team for the friendly, including the 30-year-old City forward.

The Italian said: “He was very good. He confirmed the quality we know he has.

“He’s a good option maybe if we need to have one striker and at the moment, we have no other players in this position.

“Football is about results, but we had some good situations and three or four of the players showed their personality in this difficult game.

“It was very important to have a good performance after the disappointment against Germany. You can see a progression.”

Greece scored the only goal after 29 minutes when Georgios Samaras played Konstantinos Mitroglou’s pass into the path of Jose Holebas, and he turned smartly past John O’Shea before shooting into the bottom corner.

  • I am not in agreement with much inf these reports. I watched the game on TV, and it was not until Wes Hoolahan was introduced, that the Irish side looked organised...Wes, you did Norwich City FC, the fans, and yourself proud last night. It is just a pity that you have to play with so many second rate performers around you!, but you must be getting used to that by now.

  • Spot on Doc. Pa, you sound disenchanted with Wessi`s team mates @ Naaridge! To think he was nearly on the way out when PL arrived and resurrected him. Same trick not possible on C. Martin, sadly.

  • "He's a good option, maybe", don't hold your breath for a third cap if Traps stays on.
