Defender Russell Martin has welcomed skipper Grant Holt’s new contract as a major boost for Norwich City.
Top scorer for the past three seasons, Holt clinched a three-year deal with the Canaries last week, taking him to 2015.
The 31-year-old had asked for a transfer, sparking more than six weeks of uncertainty over his future.
“It was a good boost for the club just before pre-season started. The big man’s staying, so it’s really good news,” said Martin.
“He had a lot of suitors because of the season he had, well, the last three years he’s had, and he’s a big character in and around the dressing room as well. It was important for us to keep him and thankfully the management and the board have managed to do that.”
Martin, speaking to Talksport on the third day back in training under new manager Chris Hughton, also welcomed the arrival of defender Steve Whittaker and midfielder Jacob Butterfield.
“We’ve made a few good additions already and I’m sure the manager’s got his sights on other players,” said Martin. “It always picks up the squad, keeps people on their toes. Competition is really healthy.
“As footballers, you have to embrace competition and use it to improve yourself.”

With reference to the well being of players, I wonder how Ayala, Vaughan and Tierney are progressing with their respective injury problems? Anybody heard anything?

Pondy, I sent two postings on the very same subject, differently worded, ie NOT "Duplicate". Both blocked.

Thanks for the compliment, ha ha! I don't think my shorthand ever reached 54wpm, let alone the typing. Btw I worked for a mega multinational and they retired ME. Sob. Believe me I exist on around the same wonga as a first year Academy trainee! OTBC

Why does a query about the health of a certian full back, a Spanish defender and a forward who did not play too much get blocked? Can we expect a scoop from the EDP about their well-being? Is there a super injunction on naming them? Have they been transferred?

I got in very late, looked at the headline and read it as "Russell Grant's new contract a boost for Norwich City". I had to go and get a drink.

Perhaps you should not have retired, el dingo. Journalism in these parts is in a parlous state. Wish I could`ve retired @ 54! Word mangling obviously more remunerative than proper work. Lambert was easily "aggravated" ie "riled". Hughton seems to be a more serene type. With a bit of human warmth, too. Aviva is a palindrome which could mean "Lifeless" whichever way you look at it.

Canarysid, it was just an example. My point was it would be good to hear something worthwhile. What I wrote was not a slur on Aviva or any other sponsor.

Thanks CanarySid - I guess people quite rightly expect more than they get from Archant, who at this juncture appear clueless. In Chris Goreham I trust! OTBC

Interesting to see that a lot of ex-Norwich players have been on the move. Noticed that Jon Otsemobor has moved to MK Dons... I remember the big hoo-hah when he left us!

hey CovCanary Why would we want or need a New Sponsor ??? We have One of the Best Worldwide Known Insurance Companies as our Sponsor....I am sure CH will be bringing in a few New Faces. El Dingo i Agree hopefully the EEN & EDP won't Aggravate CH like they did PL.

Okay then, ether me!. Shorter version: CH is a nice guy, I met him briefly years ago when he played for Spurs and the Republic. Please don't aggravate him the way you did Lambert with stupid headlines. Thanks, a proper journalist (retired @ 54). OTBC

I'd rather have rehashes of radio stuff than some stupid sub-editor headlining PL as wishing to "manage in Germany". Funny how his exclusive column went AWOL immediately after that incident isn't it Archant? If you manage to similarly alienate a personable and decent guy like CH (I met him briefly 25-odd years ago) you've really surpassed yourselves. NUJ ticket for 30 years before retirement so I feel I can comment in this manner. OTBC
