West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady has refused to be drawn into mounting speculation the Hammers are closing in on Norwich City skipper Grant Holt.
Canaries’ chief executive David McNally used his personal Twitter account earlier this week to knock down reports City had accepted the Londoners’ latest offer for the club’s triple player-of-the-year.
Holt has been the subject of two previous bids from the Premier League new-boys after his surprise transfer request at the end of last season.
Fresh reports West Ham are now ready to meet City’s valuation led to claims of a £5.5m move for the 31-year-old – but Brady has reiterated her club will do their summer transfer business through the proper channels.
“It’s not appropriate to comment on other people’s players,” said Brady, when asked directly if Holt was on Sam Allardyce’s shopping list. “We prefer to do our business face to face with the chairmen of other clubs, and that’s what we’ll do.
“We hope to bring in a few more significant signings to improve our team and increase our chances of remaining in the Premier League and really ‘have a go’. Sam has made a very strategic plan. We have a comprehensive list of players we hope to bring in and we are working to do that.”
Evian’s £4m-rated striker Yannick Sagbo is the latest player linked with an Upton Park move, with Allardyce reportedly close to securing loan deals for Inter Milan’s Luc Castaignos and Juventus’ Eljero Elia following a trip to Italy last week.
Holt’s representative, Lee Payne, expects the striker’s future to be resolved when new Canaries’ boss Chris Hughton returns to work next week following a Florida break. Holt had also been touted with a potential reunion with Paul Lambert, but Norwich’s England keeper John Ruddy used his Twitter account to distance himself from reports he could make a Villa Park switch. Ruddy tweeted: “With regards to these rumours that everyone is tweeting me about I don’t know where they have come from, I have no desire to leave Norwich City.”
The Daily Record yesterday claimed Lambert was trailing Rangers’ Scottish international keeper Allan McGregor, who could potentially leave the ailing Ibrox club this summer.
City’s scheduled pre-season game at Celtic has been brought forward 24 hours to Tuesday, July 24 (KO 7.45pm) to avoid a clash with the Olympic football tournament taking place at Hampden Park.

I agree Pondy, we conceded the midfield to whoever we were playing. Ashley Young seemed to be a liability and Milner had been practicing unsuccessfully in the barnyard. It did not look like Rooney had turned up either. To be fair, AC got some solid defensive headers in but not a lot else.

LOL, not sure how many more BJH puns we can do. I saw them in 1975 at Newcastle City Hall, a pleasant Sunday evening but that was all. I think they are still going, they played a rock venue near here called Z7, a unit on an industrial estate where all the oldies tour, it's like West Runton Pavillion revisited. I like to go there as I am never the oldest punter. Good to hear that Timbo will settle for a set of comedy teeth as his fee.

I would be inclined to stop fretting and wait for the signed, sealed and gone if and when it ever happens (which I believe won't)!! This emotional blackmail has been going on far too long in my book. And the only loser here will be Holt, if he decides to leave; joining another club won't necessarily work in his favour I'm afraid.

Grant Holt is and always will be a NCFC legend, but if he wants to go lets thank him wish him well and cash in. If he truly wants to stay lets pay him a few extra quid and keep on singing 'there's only one Grant Holt'. Either way lets get it done, otherwise there will be no winners.

No news then. Lee Payne is a fairly regular commenter in the press and has a long relationship with Sam Allardyce. Here is an exert from a 2006 interview in the Guardian, "I've dealt with Sam Allardyce and he was very professional. There was never a question of him wanting to be "looked after". I've done deals with Harry Redknapp, too - I helped take Svetoslav Todorov to West Ham and then Portsmouth - and, again, he was a joy to work with. There was never a question of a bung. But sadly, some agents give us all a bad name". He claims to have discovered Jussi Jaaskelainen at a small club in Finland but after five years had him pinched by agent Peter Harrison who was subsequently disgraced and bankrupt, though in turn Harrison blames other agents for slow, quirky and expensive deals and all sorts of "bungs". What ever happened to a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.

No Norwich fan wants him to leave. But it seems, alas, to be only heading one way. And if so, facts are that he's a whole-hearted, 15-goal Premier league striker who has scored against world-class defenders in the top teams, and now also has the top-flight experience that teams coming up desperately need. Whatever his age, whatever his supposed (untrue) lack of mobility, those facts alone should make his price £8m or above. Anything less would be a travesty.
