Some of Norwich City's best known players of the 1980s and 90s helped raise thousands of pounds for two good causes at a charity game in a Norfolk village.

Jerry Goss, Robert Fleck, Dale Gordon, Mike Milligan and Mark Barham all turned out for a Canaries' All Stars team which played out a 3-3 against Saham Toney, near Watton, in front of a crowd of about 1000 at the village playing field.

“Disco” Dale treated the crowd to some of his famous step overs during the game, which has raised at least £5200 for the Prostate Cancer Charity and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

“It was absolutely fantastic and it was the biggest event ever staged in Saham,” said a delighted Saham Toney Playing Field and Football Club chairman Gordon Pitcher.

The match was played for the Stephen George Mower Memorial Cup.

Mr Mower died in March 2007 and was a “legend” at Saham Toney with his involvement in the football and cricket clubs.

Mr Pitcher said: “I am very proud I could call him my friend and that is one of the reasons why I remain involved with the football club.”

A minute's silence was held before the game for Mr Mower and also Malcolm Darlow - who died from prostate cancer last November - and Georgina Steadman, 16, who died from cystic fibrosis in December.

Norwich have already agreed to play at the venue again next year.

Mr Pitcher heaped praise on all those who helped to organise it, especially Helen Parker, Angela Bower, Claire Coates and Tanya Steadman.

Mrs Parker and Mrs Bower are both running the London Marathon this year for the Prostate Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis charities respectively.

The big crowd was treated to a fine spring day - a stark contrast to the wet and cold conditions of 24 hours earlier.

As well as the game, there was also an auction with a wide range of lots including Norwich City corporate tickets, signed Mike Tyson gloves and photo, gloves signed by Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera and a signed England football shirt.
