The season started in the traditional way with the first round of the Birds Sport and Outdoor Benevolent Cup, the league's equivalent of the Cup Winners Cup. The league champions and winners for the past two season, Toftwood Rangers, played host to the Division Two champions, Thetford Athletic. Toftwood went two goals up in the first half and held onto the lead until early in the second half. Thetford scored twice in the opening 20 minutes of the half and then sealed victory with a goal in the 90th minute. The game was well refereed by Tony Wearing. Last year's Junior League Cup winners, North Elmham, proved too strong for their Division Three opponents West End and ran out 4-1 winners.
The Division Four champions, Thetford Rovers Reserves, travelled to meet the Primary League Cup winners, Dickleburgh, and won 2-0. Bunwell, the Division Three champions, entertained Hingham Athletic, the Ben Smith Memorial Cup winners but did not have quite enough to cause an upset. Hingham deservedly led 2-0 at the break but were pegged back by a determined Bunwell team who twice got back to within a goal of their Division One visitors before having to concede the match on the wrong end of a 3-2 score line. The match was played in an excellent spirit and was well controlled by Nigel Raven.
The draw for the semi-finals has resulted in the two Thetford teams being paired together while North Elmham will meet Hingham Athletic.
The league programme gets underway next Saturday with 21 matches being played across all four divisions and then there will be a smaller number of fixtures in the opening midweek round of matches on the following Wednesday.
