King's Lynn Town sealed their place at Carrow Road with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Norwich United in the Norfolk Senior Cup semi-finals.
The Linnets had the best of the first half at the FDC in Bowthorpe, with Michael Clunan forcing an excellent save from United keeper Andy Wilton in the 16th minute, after a one-two with Sam Warburton from a corner on the left.
Lynn grabbed the lead their good play deserved in the 28th minute when Clunan curled a free-kick from the left of the penalty area to the back post, where Ryan Fryatt thumped home a header for 1-0 – for his third headed goal in two games.
It should have been 2-0 two minutes before the break when Eoin McQuaid played in Toby Hilliard, only for the Lynn striker to fire wide.
Warburton thumped against the bar early in the second half for the Linnets but, other than Dylan Edge firing wide in the 56th minute after being played through by McWilliams, it was a second half of toil for both sides.
Christy Finch tested Alex Street at his near post in the 83rd minute but it looked as if both defences would stand firm – only for a late twist. A desperate surge saw United create chaos in the Lynn box and Sam Watts nodded past the flailing arms of Street from six yards to equalise and send the game into extra-time.
Dawid Radomski forced Street into a good save early in the first half of extra-time as the Planters enjoyed a second wind. Street superbly denied Adam Hipperson in the second half and Hilliard fired wide late for Lynn, before Jordan Yong made a goal-saving tackle on Tim Henery to send the game to a penalty shoot-out.
The score was 5-4 after Fryatt scored Lynn’s seventh penalty but Watts blasted over the bar to be the unfortunate player to miss as United were beaten in the shoot-out.
Ian Culverhouse’s team will now face either Harleston Town or Fakenham Town in the final at Carrow Road on Monday, May 22. That semi-final is being played at the FDC tomorrow night, kick-off 7.30pm, entry £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
