Michael Clunan remained as ice cold as the weather to convert two vital penalty kicks as King’s Lynn Town preserved their top dog status in the Southern Premier division at The Walks on Saturday.
A late Cameron Norman effort ensured there were to be no late dramas after Ashley Sammons had given Redditch a first-half lead with a 30-yard screamer.
The Linnets began well despite manager Ian Culverhouse’s pre-match revelation that he had changed his team due to the heavy nature of the pitch.
Simon Lappin’s teasing corner was met crisply by the head of Ryan Fryatt whose effort was cleared from the line for another flag kick which resulted in Ryan Jarvis firing just wide.
Sam Gaughran appeared to be flattened in the box trying to get onto another lofted Lappin centre but referee George Laflin declared a fair challenge. The visitors spurned a glorious chance to take the lead when Alex Street denied Kevin De Vega Montieiro with his legs.
Clunan struck the post after being set up by Jarvis and Street again denied a clear visiting chance for the impressive Dior Angus. The home keeper however was helpless eight minutes before the break as Sammons let fly with a vicious swerving shot, which flew into the net,
Street again denied Angus minutes after the restart with a miraculous save from close in as Redditch threatened to double their lead.
Gaughran then passed up a golden opportunity to equalise when he somehow spooned Clunan’s free kick over the bar when he almost stood under it.
Norman’s centre then saw Michael Gash fire wide before the Linnets made a double change introducing Ryan Hawkins and Leon Mettam. Hawkins instantly broke free but an awful scuffed effort failed to test Ethan Ross.
Just after the hour though Lynn were level when Clunan converted from the spot after a trip on Fryatt. Amazingly Fryatt then saw a second header again cleared from the visitors line with the Redditch defence under severe pressure and it came as no real surprise when Norman was felled by a rash challenge allowing Clunan to sweep home his second spot kick of the afternoon – his ninth successful 12 yard effort of the season.
Jarvis then went close as his drive hit the outside of Ross’s right hand post. The match briefly turned ugly when the experienced Stuart Fleetwood, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, was shown a straight red after an altercation with Hawkins on the near touchline which left the Lynn man clutching his face.
Norman rounded off proceedings with the goal his performance deserved as he skipped around a number of despairing attempted tackles before beating Ross from the tightest of angles.
