Defender Sam Gaughran has this afternoon completed his return to The Walks after signing for King's Lynn Town.
The 25-year-old told Lowestoft Town on Monday that he could not see out the remaining year on his contract due to increased work commitments and the travelling demands of playing in National League North.
However, the Linnets’ move into the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division, one tier below the level Gaughran plied his trade successfully last term, has helped convince the newly Peterborough-based centre-back to rejoin the side where he made his name as a youngster.
A statement on Lowestoft’s website said: “The club have today agreed an undisclosed fee that will see Gaughran released from his contract to join the Linnets. We would like to wish Sam Gaughran all the best at Kings Lynn Town and yet again thank him for his time with us.”
Upon his release from Norwich City’s Academy in 2004, the classy operator signed for Lynn. Two years’ later, aged 16, he made a string of promising first-team displays which saw Peterborough United come calling.
The former King Edward VII (KES) High School pupil was released after his two-year scholarship came to an end in 2009. Progressive Lowestoft were the first team to pounce and that’s where Gaughran remained – despite announcing he agreed terms with Gary Setchell’s Linnets in 2012 before turning his back on the deal – until earlier this week.
Gaughran – a youth-team coach with Peterborough – skippered the Blues last term and made a total of 93 appearances for the Crown Meadow outfit, winning the supporters’ player of the year for 2013-14.
Setchell has made no secret of his desire to improve his side’s defensive solidity this summer and is absolutely ecstatic at his latest piece of business – thought to have cost only the reimbursement of his new arrival’s wages since the end of last season.
