King's Lynn boss Keith Webb last night clinched the signing of former Boston United defender Ben Chapman.

Webb captured his number one target to fill the vacant left back slot after a protracted summer chase.

The Scunthorpe-based defender had also attracted interested from Blue Square Premier new boys Droylsden after being released by Nuneaton Borough.

"I'm absolutely delighted," said Webb. "It has been a little time consuming because I had to give him some space. From what I understand Droylsden have messed him about a little bit and he's not prepared to hang about waiting for them to come back to him.

"It's a good boost to the squad because the left back area was key for me. Louis (Blois) did a good job, but Ben will bring experience and quality."

The Linnets' chief is also keen for the 28-year-old ex-Grimsby trainee to mentor young gun Joe Francis in a potent left-sided partnership.

"I think he can help Joe," said Webb. "They'll get every opportunity to impress in the early games and it's up to them to take it. Joe can have the confidence to get forward and hurt teams knowing he has someone like Ben behind him who can show Joe the ropes at this level."

Webb confirmed talks continue with a potential football league recruit. The Linnets' boss is also tracking Stamford's left sided defender Steve Julian.

"He is one we have looked to bring in," said Webb. "I believe he has had an offer from a different club but we'd like to have a look at him.

"The lads are coming back this weekend and things will start to settle down and take shape over the next few weeks. We will be training weekends and twice during midweek so there is plenty of work ahead of us.

"I'm looking forward to it but we won't be stupid. I don't want injuries before the season even starts."
