A proposed radical shake-up at Lowestoft Town could see a number of club officials losing their positions.

A proposed radical shake-up at Lowestoft Town could see a number of club officials losing their positions.

A meeting at Crown Meadow on Monday night saw principal club sponsor Gary Bennett voted in as acting chairman, and he wasted little time in making his intentions clear for the Blues' future.

“Basically, we are giving our committee members seven days to prove their worth to the club,” he said.

“The days when committee member could just come along to a match for a sandwich are over. If members cannot show their worth and commitment to Lowestoft Town they will be asked to leave.

“Even members that stay will be here on the condition of 'three strikes and you're out”.

Bennett replaces former chairman Peter Gamble, who was voted in last September.

The new appointment comes in the wake of a tempestuous week at Crown Meadow.

A frantic spell of fundraising at the club has raised £19,000 - enough to halt an inland revenue winding-up order, but far from enough to secure the club's long-term future.

Bennett added: “The fundraising campaign has been brilliant. We are now safe for the remainder of this season. However, we still need to find £57,000 to ensure Lowestoft's survival after that. We are still only treading water.

“We need to start running this club as a business. Frankly, I was shocked when I saw some of the mistakes that have been made here.”

Bennett, who runs Gary Bennet driving school in Lowestoft, claims he is unclear on how long he will remain in his acting chairman role.

He added: “Ideally, I will be in the job for just a few weeks until we find a permanent successor. However, if nobody can be found I'll take the job as I know how this football club works.”
