Toftwood pleased to beat weather

The wretched Easter weekend weather was the main winner on Saturday with nearly two-thirds of the league programme lost to waterlogged pitches.

The wretched Easter weekend weather was the main winner on Saturday with nearly two-thirds of the league programme lost to waterlogged pitches.

In division one, the defending League champions Toftwood United closed the gap at the top to just one point with a 7-2 defeat of Rockland United The other match ended in a 4-2 home win for North Elmham over Dereham Posties.

In division two, Shipdham moved up to second place by completing a quick double over Wymondham Town A with a 5-0 home win while Saham Toney Reserves won 6-1 at North Elmham Reserves.

The division four leaders Thetford Rovers Reserves beat Hindolveston 7-5 at home in a high-scoring game while Sporle got back to winning ways with an emphatic 9-0 victory at Garboldisham. In the other match, Great Cressingham beat bottom team Bunwell Reserves 2-0.

In group A of the Fen Regis Invitation Shield, Dereham Town A beat Shropham United 6-2 in a game well refereed by Peter Venables. Dereham will now entertain Yaxham Reserves in the semi-finals on April 12 with Great Cressingham meeting Beetley in the other semi-final. In group C, Bridgham United proved too strong for Splitz United, beating them 12-2.

The first silverware of the season was picked up by Toftwood United on Wednesday night when they successfully retained the Birds Sport & Outdoor Benevolent Cup beating Thetford Athletic 2-1 in an excellent game of football at Aldiss Park well controlled by Gary Shaw.
