Bungay Town Ladies moved into pole position in the race for the Norfolk Women’s and Girls’ League Division One title with a 5-3 win over North Walsham Ladies.
With Sprowston Ladies without a game, Bungay used the opportunity to leapfrog their championship rivals to go top on goal difference with both sides on 34 points. Lauren Purling opened the scoring with a fine header from a Nicky Hazell corner before a Sam Walker 25-yard piledriver doubled their lead.
Emily Leach produced a fine finish to make it 3-0 before half-time and the game looked all but over.
North Walsham pulled one back at the start of the second half and alarm bells started ringing when they got another to make it 3-2.
But Bungay kept battling and Walker made it 4-2 with a composed finish but North Walsham just wouldn’t go away and made it 4-3.
Hazell finally put the result beyond any doubt late on with a sliding finish.
Bungay know that if they win their two remaining games against Gorleston Ladies and North Walsham they will effectively wrap up the title thanks to their goal difference.
Thorpe United could yet have a say in the title race after their 4-0 win over Fakenham Town Ladies. Rebekah Lake, Edie Wright, Leanne Ferdani and an own goal ensured Thorpe would be just a point away from the top two if they win their game in hand.
FC Sprowston wrapped up the Division Two title with a 3-0 win over Gorleston Rangers Ladies.
They had to wait until the second half to get the goals though as Charlie Head bagged a brace whilst Melissa Belsey wrapped up the victory late on.
Credit must go to a much improved Gorleston side and also to Beccles who pushed Sprowston all the way this season.
FC Sprowston must now prepare for the League Cup final on Sunday, a game that Sprowston can enjoy with no pressure on them.
Beccles Town Ladies will have to settle for the runners-up spot after they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bure Valley Wildcats Ladies.
Seven-a-side Division champions Costessey Sports Ladies romped to a 5-1 win over Morley Ladies.
