King's Lynn boss Keith Webb is demanding no let up from his men in tonight's latest pre-season test against Scottish First Division outfit Clyde at The Walks (7.45pm).

Lynn hit back to beat Blue Square Premier Cambridge United at the weekend, but Webb warns his new look squad must continue to impress with no one assured of a starting spot for the league opener at Burscough.

Webb insists it's a blank sheet of paper despite the high profile close season arrivals of experienced football league trio Julian Joachim, Mark Peters and Simon Weaver.

"We've brought players in over the summer but I haven't got a starting XI for Burscough," he said. "That is what I'm looking for in these games, but that squad mentality has been our strength in the past. We'll keep looking and if anyone comes along who can make us better than we'll add to it - but they're going to have to be good players to do that. The lads already here have to handle competition for places. If they can't cope with that side of the game then they have to go elsewhere.

"The first practice match was about getting rid of the cobwebs. We've got five more games now and things are coming along nicely. Clyde will be a step up again in terms of opposition and that is what we need."

The Scottish side cruised to a 4-0 win at Ridgeons Division One club Great Yarmouth on Saturday. John Brown's team were scheduled to continue their mini Norfolk tour with a behind-closed-doors practice match yesterday against Norwich before a prestige friendly against Uefa Cup finalists Rangers next week.

"Our fitness levels are good and the preparation will be helped by the players being together," said Brown. "It is a tough schedule with three matches in four days but it will be beneficial. These matches will give us a stiff challenge and the boys will need to push themselves further."

Former Rangers star Gary McSwegan created Clyde's last two goals against the Bloaters. The 37-year-old appeared in the Champions League at Ibrox before spells with Hearts and Dundee United.

Linnets' stopper Scott Howie made 55 appearances for Clyde in a two year stint before his club record £175,000 transfer to Norwich in August 1993.

Midfielder Ben Sedgemore is available after missing Lynn's opening pre-season games due to work commitments. Webb will again run the rule over former Premiership play maker Kevin Horlock and ex-Cambridge City youngster Kieran Deane.

"I felt Kieran did all right against Cambridge and he is one we might have a look at over the next few games," said Webb. "Having said that Charlie (Defty) did well. He perhaps has more knowledge of that right back position and it showed at times. That position is up for grabs. At the minute I'm not saying I'm desperate to bring someone in or panicking for Burscough but I'll keep looking to see what is out there.

"We'll monitor the situation with Mark Peters. His groin injury is nothing serious and the physio has given him some strengthening work to focus on. I had a little chat with Greg Crane and Simon after the first practice match about one or two things like positional play and I felt they took that on board and looked a lot more comfortable at the weekend."
