Diss Town were clinging to their Ridgeons League Premier Division status by their finger-tips at the weekend after recording a third straight victory.

The Tangerines rounded off a poor campaign in fine style on Saturday when they beat Stanway Rovers 2-0 at Brewers Green Lane thanks to two first half goals from David Lawence.

With fellow strugglers Halstead being held to a 3-3 draw by Wisbech that was enough to take Paul Tong's side up to third from bottom in the table - and if certain rumours are to be believed that might just be enough to keep them up.

Hopes of finishing outside the official relegation places were swiftly extinguished when news of CRC's 2-0 victory over Felixstowe filtered through.

But Diss' fate won't be confirmed until Histon reveal what plans they have for their reserve side following their promotion to the Nationwide Conference.

It has been suggested that the Cambridesghire outfit might want their second string to play at a higher level than the Ridgeons League after moving up the football ladder - and if that proves to be the case then the Tangerines will be staying up.

But Tong was keeping his feet firmly on the ground yesterday.

“We have all heard the rumours about Histon but I think we might be clutching at straws with that,” he said.

“As it stands at the moment we are relegated and I have got to start preparing this club for life in Division One. We have got some quality players here and I think we've shown over the last four games what we are capable of. I could not have asked more of them.

“I think we have steadied the ship and now we have got to put this behind us and move on.”

At the other end of the table champions Wroxham suffered only their second league defeat of the season as they went down 3-2 at Mildenhall.

Swaffham clinched promotion to the top flight courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Whitton.

They needed a favour from elsewhere to go up and got it as lowly Long Melford held Ely to a surprise 1-1 draw. As a result, the Pedlars finished in third place behind Haverhill, who beat March 3-2.

Meanwhile, Great Yarmouth Town have announced that Nick Banham has accepted the post of permanent manager following a period as caretaker. Banham, the longest-serving goalkeeper in the club's 110-year history, took temporary charge in December after the club parted company with Kevin Rowark.

A troubled season ended successfully on Saturday when they held champions Walsham Le Willows to a goalless draw at the Wellesley in front of their second highest crowd of the campaign. This completed a run of five games without defeat.

Walsham were presented with the championship trophy by league officials on the pitch at the end of the game.
