King's Lynn joint boss Kevin Boon hailed the signing of former Norwich City defender Pat Bexfield as a signal of Town's intent for the new season.

The 21-year-old defender made his Linnets' debut in the midweek UCL win at Boston Town which saw Lynn bounce back from a disappointing opening day defeat at Long Buckby.

Bexfield progressed through Norwich's youth ranks to earn a professional contract at Carrow Road but was one of nine players released by ex-City boss Glenn Roeder in 2008. The former Canaries' academy prospect was a regular last season for Cambridge City at Southern League, Premier Division level but has agreed a Walks switch.

Boon said he and joint boss Gary Setchell were determined to freshen up Town's squad after a shock 3-0 weekend defeat in Northamptonshire.

“We've made no secret of the fact that if we feel there are players available who can improve us we will never shut the door,” said Boon. “Pat is a lad who was good enough to earn a professional contract at Norwich and was even on the bench at first team level. Myself and Setch met his family, showed them around and told both them and Pat that he can progress back up the pyramid with us. He has a great engine, great pace and quality as you would expect.

“Setch brought him to Wisbech when he was there, but he broke his arm and was out for a while. He played 30 odd games at Cambridge City. I spoke to Gary Roberts and he didn't want to lose the lad but he is a versatile player who can operate at full back and in central midfield.”

Boon saluted Lynn's large travelling support after Jack Defty's late strike in midweek kick started the club's UCL campaign.

“It was a great result,” he said. “The commitment was excellent by the players, they responded perfectly after the weekend and we were so pleased for them - but it was really a victory as much for the supporters. We had over 200 travel who had to finish work, spend money to get over there and then pay out again to go in. I can't wait now for Saturday and the first home league game. That will be a fitting reward for those fans and the Chapman family for what they have done so far.”
