Lowly Ware stunned runaway leaders Lowestoft Town with an odd goal of five victory that their battling performance fully warranted.

Joint manager Micky Chapman said yesterday: “It was a disappointing day for us. We didn't deserve anything from the game - we were terrible, to be frank.

“We are all disappointed, but the sign of a good side is how you respond and that test comes on Tuesday against Tilbury at Crown Meadow in the last 16 of the Championship Manager Cup.”

He was quick to dismiss the idea that complacency might have set in, saying: “For 99 per cent of this season, coming into a new league, they have been first class. They don't go out there to lose. We don't let them get complacent.

“Something you get a day when nothing goes right - you see that with top sides too - it was our day [on Saturday].

“They have got an opportunity to put it right on Tuesday. We have got a lot of confidence in our boys - they are a good bunch of lads and hopefully it will happen.”

Lowestoft were originally due to play away at Tilbury in the league on Tuesday night but that was changed because of the cup game against the same team.

In Saturday's game against Ware, Greg Crane and Gary Holt returned to the Lowestoft starting line-up but Matthew Halliday had not recovered from the injury sustained the previous week.

Andy Reynolds was ill and his place between the posts was taken by Dave Attridge.

Ware stunned Lowestoft by taking the lead inside the first minute.

The speedy Bradley Drisdale picked up a loose clearance and played the ball into the middle for Michael Toner to knock the ball past Dave Attridge in the Blues goal.

Lowestoft were quick to level the scores in the sixth minute. A Joe Francis corner was completely misjudged by Ware keeper Ricky Wiseman to allow Matt Nolan a free header into the net.

Ware were still looked the more likely side and Michael Toner again worked his way through before Darren Cockrill's timely tackle saved the day for the Blues.

Lowestoft were being restricted to long-range efforts with both Craig Bussens and Joe Francis seeing 30- yard efforts dip over the bar.

A Gary Holt shot was blocked but Gary McGee pounced to send a shot flashing across the face of the goal.

An early chance in the second half saw Gary McGee take the ball past Ware keeper Ricky Wiseman before being crowded out by Matt Turpin.

Whilst Lowestoft attacks were floundering against a strong Ware defence, the visitors' speedy attacks were causing the Blues defence problems.

Ryan Wade was played through but stubbed a shot straight at Dave Attridge and Luke Marshall went past Darren Cockrill but Attridge pushed his shot around a post.

It was no surprise when Ware regained the lead in the 67th minute.

A slip by the usually dependable Neil Plaskett allowed Luke Marshall a clear run at goal and he took the ball around Attridge to slip it into the net.

A fine Ryan Wade volley brought an excellent diving save from Attridge but from the resultant corner Matt Turpin powered a header into the net for a third Ware goal.

Ware were reduced to 10 men six minutes from time when Michael Toner received a second yellow card.

With a man advantage, Lowestoft tried to get something from the game with an Andrew Fisk lob being pushed onto and over the bar by Ricky Wiseman.

In the final minute Adam Fisk was brought down in the penalty area for Matt Nolan to reduce the arrears from the penalty spot - but despite the four minutes of added time Lowestoft could not conjure up an equaliser.
