Police said the attack happened late on Friday.
The defender and former England under-21 joined West Ham from Tottenham for �3m in 2007.
He was brought to Norwich City on loan by Nigel Worthington in 2005.
He had a spell on loan for Sunderland last season and also played for Coventry City.
A West Ham spokesman said: "The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff.
"The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the on-going investigation, no further information will be released."
Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Bedfordshire police this evening arrested a 25-year-old man in Derby for attempted murder in connection with the assault.
A 19-year-old man, arrested shortly after the incident, is also being held for questioning.
