Norwich City chairman Roger Munby confirmed no decision had yet been taken on Bryan Gunn's managerial future following City's relegation to League One.

Munby revealed the club's board will meet later this week to start the huge summer re-building job after the Canaries slipped into English football's third tier for the first time in 49 years after today's abject 4-2 Championship defeat at Charlton.

Gunn publicly stated he wants the post on a permanent basis ahead of the club's trip to The Valley and Munby hinted City's final day capitulation will not wreck his chances.

“Bryan Gunn says he wants to be the man that carries Norwich back up and that carries a lot credentials as far as I'm concerned,” said Munby. “That is frankly one of the decisions we have to take in the very near future.

“We haven't met as a board. We promised we wouldn't and we told Bryan we felt it would be inappropriate to anticipate anything until the season was genuinely over and after the emotions of the season had subsided.”

Munby admitted City's much maligned board were distraught after watching the club surrender their Championship status.

“I felt hugely let down by the players,” he said. “I can't think of a worst day. I don't believe that the 6-0 at Fulham was worst than this. It's the worst day, the most devastating day because of the contrast of the good will and hopes of thousands and thousands of fans and the club and the community back home and the performance on the pitch which was intolerable. Without doubt this is the most devastating day in my long association with the club.”

Munby refused to blame Gunn for overseeing the club's second relegation in four seasons after taking over from Glenn Roeder for the final months of the current campaign.

“Maybe the decline hasn't continued, but this is the final act of the same sad opera,” he said. “With hindsight, observations come to mind about the previous manager and the one before that. Both had the technical ability and integrity but the appropriateness of those appointments for our club is another matter.

“This is the denouement, the bottoming out and I believe it to be that. The raw material that Bryan picked up could not make it in the end. I'm not technically skilled in football matters to tell you why. We have to collectively and individually look in the mirror over the summer.”
