Norwich legend Iwan Roberts expects City's board to go for experience again in their latest managerial quest.

Glenn Roeder was seen as the antidote to the untried Peter Grant when he was appointed in October 2007 but Roeder's 14-month spell ended after a wretched FA Cup midweek cup exit to Charlton.

Newly qualified Uefa A coach and media pundit Roberts has ruled out applying for the post again after declaring his interest when Nigel Worthington was dismissed in 2006.

“I've always said I'd like to come back in some capacity,” he said. “Whether in coaching or management, but I think they will be looking for someone with plenty of experience. They tried Peter Grant in his first job and it didn't really work out. It's a bit of a merry-go-round but Aidy Boothroyd has been mentioned this time. He did a great job at Watford and has worked at Norwich in the past. I'm sure they've still got my CV from last time and if I apply perhaps I'll get a reply this time.”

In his broadcasting role, Roberts has seen his share of Norwich this season, including the 2-2 draw at Cardiff in August and the 3-2 home defeat by Swansea in November.

“I saw them at Cardiff and they passed the ball as well as any side, but there was something lacking in the final third and they were struggling to score goals,” he said. “Against Swansea they should have been 3-0 up at half-time and it came back to haunt them.

“Live on TV, they absolutely battered Ipswich. But they can't do it on a consistent basis.”

Despite City's struggle this season, Roberts has admiration for Roeder.

“I've got a lot of time for the man,” he said. “He helped me as a young kid at Watford. He was coming to the end of his career but he was great with the young lads and a great professional to have around. Glenn had a bad experience at West Ham - I don't like to see people suffer or taking abuse - and was treated badly at Newcastle, and Norwich looked like a great job for him to get.

“I don't place it all at Glenn's door. The position the club is in goes back to before Glenn.”

The ex-Wales striker revealed he was in the company of Worthington when they heard the FA Cup result that effectively sealed Roeder's fate on Tuesday night.

“I was at the Histon-Swansea FA Cup game for BBC Wales. Nigel Worthington was there and when the result came through, we felt it could be the final nail,” said Roberts. “It's been a shocking run when you look at the league position, with only goal difference keeping them out of the bottom three. They haven't got the results they should have had and they felt it was probably time for a change.

“I feel for Glenn, because he had no money to spend and had to rely on loan signings. That's really hard. They don't really belong to the club and they're hoping to play well and go back to their Premier League clubs and get back into the first team.”
