Bryan Gunn has seen a whole host of former team-mates and colleagues making a success out of football management - now it's his turn.

Having taken advice, good luck messages and congratulations from Sir Alex Ferguson, Gunn recalled the simple words of others that prompted him to try his hand at the ultimate job in club football.

“There was the inspiration that Sir Alex gave me in the build-up to Saturday's game, and he already sent me a good luck message first thing this morning because obviously I've been speaking to him about this situation and how to go about it,” said Gunn.

“Alex McLeish I spoke to, Gordon Strachan - they did tell me it doesn't get any better than 4-0, but 'if you want it, go for it'.

“I have seen the way those other ex-Aberdeen players have gone about their football careers - Eric Black at Wigan as well - and some of the ex-Norwich City players - Mark Bowen at Manchester City - so it was always one of those questions I asked myself.

“There's a football scenario as well. I've played for my country, I've played for Aberdeen and Hibernian in Scotland, as a football player you'd say that was the pinnacle, but I'd say that today for me is.”
