Josh Sargent’s involvement at the World Cup this year means Norwich City are due significant payments from FIFA.

The Canaries will gain from the Club Benefits Programme, which is set to distribute more than £150million to clubs across the world.

According to the organisation’s own website, “approximately USD 10,000 (will) be received for each one of the days the relevant player remains with his national team during the World Cup and the official preparation period”.

That preparation period is understood to consist of six days before the tournament’s kick-off, while current conversion rates mean that $10,000 figure equates to around £8,200.

Given the USA’s exit from the competition at the hands of The Netherlands on December 3, that means Sargent’s participation was worth roughly £213,000.

What complicates matters, however, is that compensation will be paid to all clubs players have appeared for in the last two years. In Sargent’s case, that includes German side Werder Bremen, from whom City bought the American in the summer of 2021.

The 22-year-old missed the last-16 clash with Louis Van Gaal’s side through injury, but payments are not affected by game time and so this will have no impact on the windfall City see.

Sargent started in his side’s group games against Wales and Iran and appeared as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with England, helping the US qualify from Group B before they lost 3-1 without him in their first knockout tie.

FIFA claim that the programme will pay out around £172million to a total 416 clubs across 63 member associations, the same amount as was distributed after the 2018 World Cup.

It was launched as part of a wider collaboration between world football’s governing body and the European Club Association, first in 2010 and extended in 2015 to cover the last two tournaments.

Sargent is now expected to return to Dean Smith's group ahead of their meeting with Swansea City on Saturday, where Norwich will be looking to kick-start their Championship campaign after a mixed start to the season.

The young forward has already scored nine goals this term from a variety of positions, impressing from the left and right wings but most consistently as a central striker.
